Photograph - Fundraising, Brighton Grammar Fundraising, 1991
A photo of President Sullivan at Brighton Grammar Junior School presenting a boy, Troy Robinson, with a plaque with the Legacy torch emblem alongside the Junior School Master, Mr Peter Toms. L/ Sullivan is also seen speaking at a school assembly and standing by a tree that had been planted in honour of Legatee Tom Bell in 1989 (see item 01538). The label explains the link to Brighton Grammar Junior School was fostered by the late L/ Tom Bell, although not a past pupil he endeared himself to the school that on his death shortly after the 1989 badge appeal the students planted a tree in his honour at a special memorial service. For many years the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the President would present them with a plaque of appreciation. Between 1991and 1995 the boys have raised in excess of $16,000. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. Till collectionTHE TILL COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT|The significance of the Alwyn Till Collection is that Alwyn was born in Mitcham in 1921. He attended Mitcham Primary School and Box Hill Boys High School. He served his Community mainly through his activities within the Christ Church Anglican Church Mitcham. He joined the Royal Australian Airforce in World War II in September 1939. He trained as a Pilot in Australia and Canada, was posted to England and saw action in Europe. He was shot down over France and rescued by and then joined the French Resistance and while fighting with them was fatally shot. A Baron fighting with him wrote to his mother to inform her of his death.|Alwyn's parents were Evaleen Victoria Till (nee Maggs) and Sydney Norman Till who first lived in Creek Road Mitcham, before moving to 573 Whitehorse Road Mitcham. His father served in World War I where his eyesight was damaged and he was taught by the then Blind Institute in suitcase making of which we have two examples in this collection. He died in 1931. Alwyn took over responsibility for his mother and sister Alison. We can understand how devastated his mother and sister would have been at the news of Alwyn's feeling that he must serve his country in World War 11.|His letters home were so precious to them that they carefully kept all his correspondence, notices of death and condolences from friends. After Alison's death in 2007 her relation Joan Walker transcribed each of Alwyn's letters home into two bound volumes. The executors, Joan Walker and Anne Drew deposited the original letters with the Whitehorse Historical Society. Due to their significance as historical documents of one serviceman's complete correspondence with his family the Whitehorse Historical Society Committee after consultation with the donors deposited the original letters with the State Library of Victoria. The Whitehorse Historical Society retains the copies.|Alison and her mother kept many family memorabilia and personal items which make up this significant collection as they show how people lived, worked and served in the local community and municipality.|This collection represents the love and devotion of the women to their families during the course of two world wars. The father was disabled as a result of World War 1 and died an early death and a son who thereafter took on the responsibility as head of the family at an early age. This young handsome charismatic son served his community in peace time and gave his life in World War 11. This mother and sister were devoted to his memory.Bible covered in black leather. Shackle, 1950's
A shackle is a U shaped piece of iron closed with a pin across the jaws. It is used for securing anchors to their cables, joining lengths of chain cables and so on. This type of shackle is the same size and shape as an ordinary link of the cable and fits into the snugs of the cable holder when verring or weighing. This Kenter type, chain joining link or shackle would commonly be used with anchor chain in the marine industry for applications such as anchors, moorings and ballast. It is a versatile link that can be opened and closed by removing and re-inserting the taper pin and lead plug, allowing for easy joining and detaching lengths of chain, and for repairing damaged links in chain. This is an example of ship's maritime hardware used in Victoria in the 19500s.Half of a chain joining shackle or joining link, Kenter type , painted blue. Often used as a marine anchor chain link. A complete shackle would comprise an oval shaped loop of thick metal and central metal chock comprises three pieces; two half oval pieces with shaped ends. The pieces are joined by a taper pin diagonally through holes in each piece, then fixed firmly by a lead plug in a hole near the head of the pin. This object is missing its other half, plus the chock and the tapered locking pin.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shackle, joining link, chain joining shackle, anchor chain joining link, marine chain joining link, kenter type chain joining link, marine hardware, kenter chain joining shackle -

Medal - Medallion, For Service In Great War 1914/18, c1918
Many towns/cities presented medallions to their citizens for service during WW1. These medallions were not necessarily presented for military service. The inscription says it was presented to D. Colquhuon for service in World War 1 by residents of of Nth Carrum. The link to Legacy is not known though presumably D Colquhuon was a Legatee. An example that medallions were a means of honouring local citizens for their work during WW1. Many civilians made a huge, unpaid contibution to the war effort. The medallion does not indicate whether or not that the recognition is for military or civil service.Medallion, circular, metal, front gold colour on outer circumference, blue colour on inner circumference, coat of arms inner circumference. Photograph, Burke Road Bridge, 1930s
Without bridges, Kew remained cut off from the City of Melbourne, only being accessible by Punt. Private and public bridges were constructed from the 1850s, beginning with the Hawthorn Bridge linking Bridge and Burwood Roads. A bridge across the Yarra at Burke Road was created as early as 1873. Since that first wooden bridge, a number of later bridges, typically on concrete pylons have been built, in 1926 and again during the 1970s.Sepia, faded photograph of the Burke Road Bridge linking East Kew and Ivanhoe. The previous bridge, constructed in 1926 was submerged beneath the flood waters in the 1934 mega-flood of the Yarra.burke road bridge (kew), bridges -- river yarra
