Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913. It was located at the Dana Street State School. As numbers grew a larger building was needed. Plans were drawn and a school built within the grounds of the School of Mines. Students started at this new school in 1921. It was officially opened on 9 September 1921 by Sir Alexander, resident of Creswick, local member for North Ballarat and the Minister for Education. He also opened the School Fair which coincided with the buildings ceremony. This was a fair on a grand scale and lasted two days and nights. Staff and students worked for weeks making articles for sale. A parent's committee led by Mr J Rogerson, a local police detective, had been organizing for months. Money raised funded the dodge-ball court, purchased a typewriter, a second-hand piano, an inter-room telephone system, an epidiascope and film projector. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antartica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Prime Minister Bob Hawke wrote in 1984 'Your incredible journey of almost 2000 miles across the Antarctic Wastelands - involving some 9 months in the field with makeshift equipment - and you're adherence to duty in the face of enormous difficulty, suffering from scurvy, and the death of comrades, will; be an inspiration to your countrymen of the future as it is to us today." After returning to Australia Dick Richards resumed his work at SMB as Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics, and developed many pieces of experimental equipment. During World War Two he acted as a scientific adviser in the production of optical apparatus in Australia. This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. Paul Keating laid a stone at the Ballarat School of Mines on 25 October 1995 on the 125th anniversary of the Ballarat School of Mines. Ballarat School of Mines Council President, Bill Gribble, studied Art at Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School. In 1956 he was working with Villiers Engineering, then Bendex Mintex in 1966. He retired from there in 1988 as Chairman and Managing Director. In 1989 Bill Gribble was appointed to the Ballarat School of Mines Council. He served as President from 1992 until his retirement in 1996. In that year the Ballarat Technical Art School building was named the W.J. Gribble building. In 1947 Percy Everett, Chief Architect for the Victorian Government, drew up plans to accomodate the growth in student numbers on the Ballarat School of Mines site. It was an era of government buildings surrounding the Ballarat School of Mines campus either being transfered to the school or foreshadowed for transfer. In 1947 two Red Cross huts were transferred from Victoria Park to the western side of the former Ballarat Supreme Court (later Courthouse Theatre) for use by Wool Classing and Motor Mechanics. In the same year additional facilities were provided for Pottery due to the increase in enrolments and a large brick classroom was built at the rear of the Ballarat Junior Technical School Building. In the annual report of 1947 the President said: "These transfers are, however, only temporary expedients and indicate the pressing need for more buildings of a permanent nature". By the end of the year the School Council decided to request the Education Department of Victoria to proceed with the implementation of the School's long-range plan whch had received approval earlier and to treat it as an urgent post-war requirement. After much communication a plan for a six-storied building, flanked by two three storied buildings was planned to be built on the site of the Ballarat Gaol was developed. The plan was sent to the Education Department for the Minister's Approval. It is not know if approval was granted, but the building did not proceed, possibly becausse the Ballarat Gaol was still very miuch in use. When a tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines was being developed in 1967 it corresponded with the closure of the Ballarat Gaol. It was determined that the Lydiard Street South site had no room for future growth so a new campus was sought. The new campus was purchased at Mt Helen, and was initially known as the Ballarat Insittute of Advanced Education. In 1976, when the Ballarat Teachers' College merged into the structure, the campus became known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and it was no longer a part of the Ballarat School of Mines. Alexander Peacock was born in Creswick, Victoria in 1861. Upon leaving school he mined and was legal manager of mining companies in Ballarat. In 1882 he joined the Creswick branch of the Australian Natives' Association (ANA) and became branch secretary. He stood for parlimnet in March 189 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing Clunes and Allandale. Peacock assisted in the establishment f the Clunes Branch of the Ballarat School of MInes which opened in 1890. He was one of the Victorian delegates to teh Federal Convention in 1897. He laid the foundation stone of the new SMB Classroom building in 1899 while MInister for Public Instruction.
