Program of a 5-day festival held 27/2/1926 - 6/3/1926 to raise funds for the Bush Fire Relief Fund, Soldiers' Memorial Hall, St Vincent's Hospital and the Catani Memorial (St Kilda cenotaph). The carnival began with a procession from what is now St Kilda Junction, down Fitzroy Street to Luna Park and the Lower Esplanade. Events included novelty races and contests including pillow-fighting, a paddling race where contestants had to balance on kerosene tins, a cigarette race where competitors raced with lighted cigarettes, and many other contests at the beach. There were also swimming events, boat races, lifesaving demonstrations, displays, music and dancing. Boiler purchased by Malvern city council to supply steam to a stationary vertical engine that drove a stone crusher. Built by George and George Pty. Ltd., Melbourne in 1929, it is an external under-fired return-flue type 18 tube boiler capable of supplying steam at 100 pounds per square inch (600 kPa). This boiler can be occasionally seen in steam at the Museum supplying steam for the operation of stationary engines on display near by. Donated by Malvern City Council in 1969. The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. Most rooms in this historically and aesthetically significant house have stone (typically marble) fireplaces that are inset with plain and decorative tiles produced by the company of Mintons Ltd.Born digital photograph of the fireplace in the main bedroom of Villa Alba. The original 1880s white marble mantel surround has a raised iron and brass cast iron grate with hearth and side tiles by Mintons Ltd. The marble fire surround has being carved in a conventional style and lacks the opulence of what was at the time described as the grandest bedroom in the Colony, whereas the raised grate features decorative brass sun symbols and scrolling on the iron panels. The 'grey monochrome' surround tiles, of which there are eight in situ were produced to design by John Moyr Smith by Mintons Ltd as part of the 'Waverley' series (No, 1607) of which there were twelve subjects (Mintons Catalogue, p. 62/206). The selection conforms to William Greenlaw's desire to symbolically represent Scottish themes in the decoration of the house. It also relates to the mural in the dining room architrave of scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. Dugout Night is an annual event where Legatees gather and enjoy the company of fellow Legatees ("comradeship"), usually in April, close to Anzac Day. A dugout in wartime provides protection for soldiers from small arms fire, artillery bombardment and attack from the air. The sign could have been made to publicise Dugout night or most likely as a caption for photographs of the event displayed at Legacy House.Legatees supported each other by coming together for various events throughout the year. The Lifeboat Queenscliffe was built in Adelaide and commenced service at Queenscliff in 1926. She was taken out of service in 1976 by the Marine Board of Victoria and subsequently offered to the Borough of Queenscliffe for care and display. The Lifeboat is listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels (ARHV). To view the classification follow the link to the Queenscliffe page on the ARHV site. During her 50 years of service the Queenscliffe attended many calls for assistance both inside and outside the Heads. Some of the vessels and calls for help the lifeboat attended were: 1960 - Army Commandos lost in the Rip 1967 - The search for the late Prime Minister Harold Holt 1974 - The last attendance to a vessel was to the Brisbane Trader which was on fire The shed which housed the lifeboat is located on the Queenscliff 'New' or 'Steamer' Pier (built in 1884). This shed includes the internal section of the slipway used to launch and retrieve the lifeboat. The external slipway and some other structures associated with the lifeboat shed have been removed. Originally fitted with two masts, the stern mast being removed in the 1960's. A retractable centre plate was used when under sail. Delivered with an 80 hp Wayburn petrol motor which was later replaced by a 72 hp Gardiner diesel. QUEENSCLIFFE was built in 1926 to a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) design called the Watson Class. The double-diagonal planked vessel was built by A McFarlane and Sons in Port Adelaide SA, commissioned on the 6th of March 1926, and then officially named and launched on the 9th of April 1926. The original Wayburn petrol engine was replaced with a Gardner diesel. This gave QUEENSCLIFFE a top speed of 7.5 knots with a range of 350 miles. The equipment carried aboard included a VHF Radio Telephone, HF radio transceiver, visual signals, life rafts, hand rocket gun, flare gun, generator, search light and first aid supplies. In the tradition of many shore based lifeboats, QUEENSCLIFFE had its own shed and slipway and was always ready for launching when required to go to sea in response to an emergency call. Its area of operation included 'the Rip' at Port Phillip Heads and the Bass Strait seas immediately offshore. It was manned voluntarily by their local fishermen and is therefore closely attached to families of the Queenscliff community. Basil George Watson was an aviation pioneer born in Bendigo 12/10/1893. The family moved to Melbourne when he was a child. In 1914 he went to England to work as an engineer for the Sopwith Aviation Company. He also took flying lessons and received his licence in 1915. He now worked as a test pilot for Sopwith but when a crash rendered him unfit for military duty, he returned to Australia in late 1915. He designed and constructed his own biplane in the back yard of his Elsternwick home. At the end of 1916 he tested his plane by flying from Point Cook to Bendigo and then to Melbourne. This included an aviation display in Bendigo. He followed this by flying to Warnambool 25/1/1916. He then set up an experimental airmail flight from Melbourne to Mount Gambier. On 28th March 1917, Watson was demonstrating aerobatics for the entertainment of AIF servicemen at Point Cook, when his plane collapsed and fell into the ocean close to shore. Unfortunately, Watson was tangled in the plane's wires and died. A uniform code of signals for working winches in mines was established in 1887. Signs displaying the signals had to be placed in clear view of the engine driver and at each level of the mine. The signals were various numbers of bells.A metal sign with a black background and red and white printing. There three sections, the top one is white text, Signals for Winding, numbered 1 to 10 and 15 down the sign, with instructions next to each number. The next section is red text, Firing Signals, with two lines numbers and writing. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.A Scout Troop is divided into smaller teams called ‘patrols’. At this time the Scout in charge of a patrol was called a patrol leader (‘PL’) and his assistant a ‘second’ (‘Sec’). Each patrol of boys would chose a patrol name, often an Australian animal or bird. Other 1st Kew patrols called themselves the Kookaburra Patrol, the Kangaroo Patrol and so forth. The shield the Emu patrol is proudly displaying is possibly the trophy for being the ‘Champion Victorian Patrol’. Alan PEASCOD (1943-2007). Born England. Arrived Australia 1952. Alan Peascod was one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed ceramic artists. For over 35 years his work has been at the forefront of the Australian ceramics movement, developing radical techniques previously unexplored with his developments in unusual glazes and firing methods. His creative repertoire includes dry glazed vessels, alkaline glazes, majolica, saturated metals, and many post firing finishes. Alan's work with the very difficult reduced lustre technique is highly regarded. He was taught the method by Professor Said El Sadr in Cairo, Egypt in 1972 and this led to lifelong research of the technique throughout the Middle East and Europe. His work in the field led to the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in 1994. This study also led to satirical figurative sculpture themes dealing with the human condition. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. Tim HOLMES Born Wales Tim Holmes first became interested in pottery on a visit to New Zealand in 1969. After returning home he studied at the local art school, then enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in 1973. While there, he was introduced to Gwyn Hanssen Pigott's work, and returned to Australia to help her set up a pottery in Tasmania. He established his own Garden Island Creek Pottery in 1977, and started making wood-fired pottery, digging and milling his own clay. He used a two- chambered kiln, firing raw- glazed domestic stoneware in the first chamber and earthenware garden pots in the second. In 1988, he moved his pottery to the Potter's Croft at Dunalley on the east coast of Tasmania. He and his wife Tammy now run the Potter's Croft as a bed and breakfast with a craft gallery, and he is still making pottery using a wood-fired kiln. Garden Island Creek Pottery had its own impressed stamp, and work may also be impressed 'TH' or incised 'T. Holmes'. Tim Holmes was a visiting visitor to Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (later Federation University) in 1983.
