Book, Place Names of South Australia, 1970
This book gives information on the place names of South Australia and the origins of the names. It was compiled by Ronald Praite and John Tolley in 1970 and so is somewhat out of date as more place names would have to be added today. European settlement began in South Australia in 1836.This book is of minor interest to those in the Warrnambool area and may be useful for those researchers whose families have some connection to early South Australian history. This is a hard cover book of 208 pages. The cover is dark red with the names of the book and the authors on the spine. The dust cover has a colour photograph of a South Australian panorama on the front and a plain green back cover. The book has a Foreword, Sources of Reference, Acknowledgements, Introduction and an alphabetical listing of South Australian place names and the origins of the names. There are many black and white photographs supplied by the South Australian Tourist Bureau. There is some colour fading on the dust cover.Front Cover: ‘Place Names of South Australia’ ‘R.Praite’ ‘J.C.Tolley’ history of south australia, place names of south australia, ronald praite, john tolley -

'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Balnarring Camp Property, 1928
The photo shows a group of people on an outing to Stan Savige's property in Balnarring. Legatee Savige is in the striped jacket on the left. Legatee Savige had a beach side property that he allowed to be used for summer camps and outings by Legacy. In this photo there is mention of the children being from Minton Boys Home which was established in Olivers Hill, Frankston in 1924. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. The photo shows Legatees took disadvantaged children on outings to L/- Savige's property as early as 1928.Black and white photo of a group of people at Stan Savige's place.Handwritten on reverse: 'Taken on Stan Savige's place Balnarring about 1928. Australian Gliding Museum
Functional object - Rudder from Geelong Gliding Club Primary Glider, 1929
The Geelong Glider Club was formed in June 1929 at a meeting held at the Belmont Common hangar of Percy Pratt. The club built a Zogling (Primary Glider) based on plans obtained from Germany and flew it off nearby hills at Lovely Banks and other places in the Geelong region. The checked rudder design (without logo and markings) is evident in a picture of a Geelong Glider Club Zogling flying at Tower Hill near Warrambool, Victoria, at Easter 1931 and this lends support to the conclusion that the rudder was part of the Club’s first glider. The logo and markings appear to be a more recent elaboration to the design. Exhibit is a historical link to the earliest gliding activities of the Geelong Glider Club.Fabric covered wooden framed primary glider rudder with metal levers decorated with silver and dark red checkered design. The item has a cat logo on one side and markings on the other of places where the Geelong Gliding Club flew in its early years. On port side – Cat logo. On starboard side – Geelong Glider Club; and place names including Geelong Aerodrome, Batesford, Ceres, Lovely Banks, Tower Hill, Koroit, Mount Moriac; and years, 1929-1933 australian gliding, glider, zogling, primary glider, rudder, geelong gliding club, lovely banks, tower hill. koroit -
