Robert Logan selected Lot 28 of the Village Settlement in 1896 and lived there until his death in 1936. Historian John Lundy-Clarke tells how Logan planted his land with plums, peaches and apples and also grew raspberries, beans, cabbages and lettuces. He also planted a small patch of oats that he harvested to feed his horse. W.G (William George) Gray, owner of Allwood Nurseries in Hurstbridge, with horses and cart laden with trees from Kinglake from where he also had a property raising stock. Shire of Eltham Councillor Gray donated English oak and oriental trees for the Anzac avenue at Hurstbridge planted in 1918. In 1922 he operated a well cultivated property of 64 cleared acres, 56 of which were under nursery healthy stock, principally apples, peaches, plums and cherries. In addition to 4 acres of potatoes. Allwood Nurseries in Hurstbridge was operated by W.G (William George) Gray. He operated a well cultivated property under nursery healthy stock, principally apples, peaches, plums and cherries and sometimes potatoes. He grew seedling stock which he supplied to other local orchardists and the overseas market. This image is of railroad train wagons loaded with fruit trees at Hurstbridge Railway Station for export to New Zealand. Frederick George Hurst (bearded) sits on top of the load (aged 73 years). His son-in-law Willian Gray stands beside the wagon. It was presented to The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M. P, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs on the occasion of his visit to the Hume Reservoir on 2nd November 1927. This album is of local and national significance as it documents the planning and development of the Hume Reservoir up to 1927. It was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. The year is not known but it is in the 1940s or 1950s as the album was a collection of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from that time. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.A record of the displays at the Annual Demonstrations. Annie and William Booth, with their five children, left England to migrate to Australia in 1923. They came on the maiden of the S.S.Demosthenes. They bought and occupied land - six and half acres in Orchard Grove, Blackburn South - from 1923 to 1942 when the moved to Salisbury Street, Mont Albert.|William Booth obtained an office position with Danks where he remained till retirement.|The home in Orchard Grove was called 'Marple' after the place in England where the honeymooners.|They ran poultry and an orchard - apples, plums, quinces and peaches which were sold for additional income. Harry Walker's property would have been run by his son William in 1922. When the CRB Road cut through the property William planted plum trees on the opposite side. These are visible in this photo. An extensive raspberry crop is in the foreground. The building over the road on the left hand side is the corn and produce store built by Edward John Price (son of Edward Joseph Price) to capitalise on the CRB Road cutting through the Price farm. This tin was made in Melbourne and contained Swallows and Ariells biscuits. The label was written in four languages. The biscuits may have been made for export or perhaps for immigrants now living in Australia. Australia's first biscuit company was founded in 1854 by Thomas Swallow. Within five years he had taken in a partner, T.H. Ariell. After Ariell died in 1875, F.T. Derham was appointed partner and managing director in 1877, a position held by several generations of his descendants. By the early 1880s the Port Melbourne factory extended to 3 acres (1.2 ha), and the company owned flourmills and sugar plantations in the Goulburn Valley and Northern Queensland. With no equal outside Great Britain, Swallow & Ariell was the fifth largest biscuit company in the world, manufacturing over 100 varieties, including the common ship biscuit (an original product) and meat biscuits (apparently taken by Burke and Wills on their ill-fated expedition). The company also boasted popular sideline products, including cakes, plum puddings, ice-cream and dried fruit. Renowned for its patriotic fundraising campaigns during both world wars, it diverted most of its biscuits and plum puddings to the Australian and US services in World War II. Company employees were filmed leaving work in 1905 in the Salvation Army film unit's first sponsored industrial documentary film. The surviving opening sequences are held by ScreenSound Australia. The company was delisted on 5 August 1964 following acquisition of more than 95% of its capital by the Australian Biscuit Co. She married Frederick William George Woods in 1913 and they had four children, Fred, Jack, Marjorie & Betty (the future Mrs John DeDoite). After the death of Fred in 1951 Eva resided at the family's Belgrave Heights holiday home until her death in 1985. The photo shows a young woman with dark hair.
