On 1 April 1991, ‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles linked with 4/19 Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment to form a new regiment of two squadrons: VMR Squadron and PWLH Squadron. This shield bears the emblem of Australian Army 2nd Recruit Training battalion, raised at Puckapunyal (Vic) to provide basic training for the Second National Service Scheme which was in place during the Vietnam War. This item is a trophy awarded to J S Archbold who was in the 7th National Service intake (C Company) for a win in a tug-of-war competition during training at Puckapunyal. Corporal Archbold served in the Australian Force Vietnam Provost Unit, 1968-69, and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery.Silver-coloured electroplated circular ashtray with four recessed grooves for resting cigarettes. Military training was never without danger especially when weapons were handled. Risks were assessed during planning and measures taken to minimise hazards. On one occasion the Conducting Officer was injured by a grenade fragment during throwing practice. Photo taken at the opening of the Puckapunyal Sportsman's Club which had been named after Legatee Donovan Joynt (see also Cat.No. 01352). The accompanying typed note, dated March 1983, identifies Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt VC and Captain Mick Moon VC as 'the only surviving VC winners from World War 1 in Victoria.' The photo was used in a Herald newspaper article on 29 March 1983 (item 01603).
