Archive - Book, Motor Spirit Ration Book 1938-1951, 1938
A Recent donation received by the Historical Society was an emergency Petrol sales book that was rescued from the demolition of the old RJ McClure Garage in Main Street. The Garage was located next door to the Town Hall and the book was rescued by a member of council Staff at the time of demolition. The book records; "the Sales of petrol, benzine or other motor spirits or of motor oil or motor accessories to travellers outside the hours prescribed by the factories and shop acts." The First Entry in the book is 14.12.1938, and the final one being 03.03.1951. A Motorist requiring to purchase fuel or motor accessories ha to record their name, address, vehicle registration number, make of vehicle, owner of vehicle, driver of vehicle, number of gallons purchased, the reason for the purcqahse and destination, Some of the reasons stated for the purchase of fuel outside hours were, Funeral arrangements, urgent Sickness, insufficent tank capacity, floodwaters, mechanical breakdown, return of soldier to camp and Urgent Military call. It is interesting to note the registration numbers. early on in the late 1930's, the rego. Numbers were all Numbers like 177301, 43973, 10790, 154900 and 49817. By the early 1040's Letters were being now being used. GC 733, HK 273, BW 450, FJ 668, and LC 612. Some of the vehicle names were recorded were: Willys, Essex, Buik, Morris, Singer, Hudoson, Whippet, Packard, Studbaker, Oldsmobile, La Fayette and Riley.Found at R.J. Diamond House Stawell Built by John HearneThis is a Photograph of the Diamond House, corner of Seaby and Princes Streets. It's almost as old as Stawell. Built by Mr John Hearne. Brown and White stones that were gathered from Church Hill were cut and carefully fitted to from Diamonds.Black and White Photograph of a very unusual home built in a pattern of Diamonds, in shades of stones. 7 different photos, Various years (1 Coloured)The Diamond House-Built of quartz and sandstone. the Diamond House, so called from its peculiar construction, is situate in Seaby Street, Stawell. and was built over 30 years ago by Mr. Hearne. The quartz and sandstones used in its construction were carted by him from Church Hill, which is just across the street. Screws were used instead of nails. It was when built intended for a wine shop and is now used as a private residence. stawell -

Photos of the Lantern Festival workshop held to pull the community together during the battle to save Big Hill from the mining Companies application to have an "Open Pit Mine" in 1998-1999. Master lantern maker Graeme Dunstan coordinated the work shops, with financial support from the "Big Hill Action Group". when the decision from Victoria State Government was given, the group celebrated by carrying lanterns from Gold Reef Hall - near the Post Office up to Big Hill.Seven colour photographs of the Lantern festive workshop at Big Hill in c 2000. Membrey Blacksmith Shop in Patrick Street beside the sale yards which later became the Technical School Gold Reef Campus. W. Membrey died when young leaving a large family. The business was then rented to Mr. G. Brehaut for 12/6 (twelve shillings six pence) per week. The Membrey family lived in Skene St. Stawell for many years. Notes record that a copy was make by Mark Dadswell, Stawell. Also the notes record in 1996 a copy was made and donated to the Society by Melbourne Museum. 76.1 - V.W. Membrey blacksmith at Marnoo. Donated by Alan Membrey June 2003 Beecroft, NSW.Sepia photograph depicting W. Membrey Black Smith shop. Standing in front of the wooden building are 10 men and 3 young boys. W. The rotunda was for general public use but after several acts of vandalism a roller door was installed.
