The Ballarat School of Mines was Australia's first, and was established in 1870. The former Ballarat Circuit Court was the first site of the Ballarat School of Mines. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. COURT HOUSE - Wodonga's first court house was a timber building constructed in 1859. In January 1877, a contract was let to add the brick building to the existing structure. This court house opened in June 1877. This gabled court house was designed by architect Peter Kerr and was constructed at a cost of £1,325. It served as the court house until it was replaced in 1920. It was then used as a private residence for many years. At various stages it was also operated as a restaurant, a real estate agency, an antique shop and currently operates as commercial offices.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A black and white image of the original Court House and Police paddock. The Baptist Chapel was first opened in March 1868 in Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, next to State School No. 28. The plans were prepared by James G. Pippett and the building was constructed by bricklayer J.F.Taylor and carpenter W. Nelson. When fire threatened its destruction in 1871, the townspeople assisted in saving the building by tearing off the roof and removing windows and flooring. Subsequently it was found that a solid silver Communion Service was missing as well as the contents of the Poor Box. The Chapel was renovated and used until 1898 when the building was moved to Main Street, next to the Post Office. Two rooms were added at the front when the building was rebuilt. It was demolished in 1985.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album, which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll. The photograph is of a substantial brick building with a shingle roof. The gable above the front entrance and the side of the building under the guttering are ornamented with rows of bricks laid horizontally. A round window sits in the centre of the gable. The central door and the front and side sash windows are topped by semi-circular brick arches. The ornamentation is continued with contrasting bricks down the corners of the building. Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. The building is the former Greenvale State School No. 890. Although a school had been functioning at Greenvale since 1870. This is a photo of the school building that was renovated in 1926. At weekends the building was often used for family gatherings and social functions in the district. As the area became developed and changed from a country settlement to a suburb, the school was relocated to a new building closer to the new housing development. The existing building became a community centre.
