This collection belonged to Sister Tessa Thomas R.R.M. (Nee Youngman) Sister Thomas was born at Creswick 1882, died Brisbane 1948. She trained at the Alfred Hospital for 3 years from 1909. On the 28th November 1914, as a staff nurse she embarked on the "Shyarra" from Australia and served at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Egypt. Both the spoon (1) and fork(2) are beautifully crafted in silver. They are meant as decorative items rather than for practical use. The handles of both items finish with shapes of a lion rampant holding a staff with fleur-de-lys. Both itmes have been much polished and the markings are illegible.

BHS records indicate that this cushion cover was among a collection of items received from the Harkaway studio of Brighton-born artist Jessie Traill following her death in 1967. During the First World War, Jessie served for three and a half years in hospitals in England and France with the Voluntary Aid Detachment. A damaged faded grey paperback book titled A Laundry-Work Note Book by Louise Wetenhall printed in dark blue letters at the top of the front cover, with the Sir Isaac Pitman emblem below and Pitman printed at the bottom. There are 49p. with black and white photographs and diagrams throughout with blank pages for the student or teacher to write notes. It is intended as a general guide and ready reminder for those taking a course in laundry work. Some pencil notes are written on p 50 and on the last inside endpaper is a small pencil drawing. Included in the book is a beige paper sheet decorated with coloured leaves around the edges with the inscription as to it's history as written below. The Cumberland Valley is near Cambarville which was a timber town near Marysville. Cambarville is notable for its giant mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) trees within the Cumberland Memorial Scenic Reserve, and relics from former sawmills and gold mining. The Big Culvert is located nearby on the Marysville - Woods Point Road, which was historically part of the Yarra Track. Cambarville was established as a timber mill town in the 1940s. Timber mill owners A Cameron and FJ Barton named Cambarville. They established the mill to salvage timber from trees destroyed in the 1939 bushfires. This is now known as the Marysville-Wood's Point Road. The Marysville-Woods Point Road was originally part of the Yarra Track, constructed in the early 1860s to provide access between Healesville and the Woods Point Goldfields. Despite the steep terrain and engineering difficulties, the Yarra Track soon became a busy route used by pack horses, horse-drawn drays, and wagons. The Michaeldene Trail is a level two loop that leads to the Taggerty River Lookout and may be undertaken as either as a Short (2.7 km) Loop, or a Long (4.3 km) Loop - 30 minutes to one hour and a half. The attractive bushland linking the Steavenson and Taggerty Rivers allows walkers and cyclists to step back in time to Marysville’s historic logging past. Sections of this mostly flat circuit follow old tramline alignments, which in places reveal the original timber sleepers on which the big logs were transported to the nearby sawmill.The Taggerty River Lookout offers views over the Taggerty River. The Trestle Bridge was built to span a small gully and provide access to the timber on Red Hill. Lady Talbot Drive is named after Lady Sarah Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Reginald Talbot, who was the Governor of Victoria from 25th April, 1904 to 6th July 1908. This road was originally constructed as a corduroy road (or log road) is a type of road or timber trackway made by placing logs, perpendicular to the direction of the road over a low or swampy area.
