Amber Bead Mandala, (exact); 2002
... , and red to darker tones. Gold outer frame with a glass front... to darker tones. Gold outer frame with a glass front. The Mandalas ...MEDIUM: Digital print. DESCRIPTION: A fractal exploration on 192 gsm archival matt. Image ranges from yellow, orange, and red to darker tones. Gold outer frame with a glass front. The Mandalas geometric designs are symbolic of the universe and used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation. The creative possibilities that exist in these sacred circles, are often based on a step-and-repeat principle, centre, and symmetry. Here we see this put into practise. The mandala has an iris quality about it with 16 pillars pulling centrally to what looks like a pupil, the centre of the mandala. This then has more points around it and then more once again. This fractal approach gives the work a textural depth. The use of blurring and merging in a kaleidoscopic fashion creates movement, the circular flow repetitive and calming. The use of reds throughout mandata art represent the glowing sun and of fire, red generally taken to be the color of life, love, joy and rage, the polar values of the color. Orange the colour of cheerfulness and gaiety, a colour mixed from red and yellow, it stands for kind-heartedness and warm-heartedness. Print - Portrait, Australian Town and Country Journal, c. 1886
This print was an 1885 Christmas gift from the publishers of the Australian Town and Country Journal to their subscribers. At that time Queen Victoria was 65 years old although she may not have been that age when the portrait was painted. The print shows Queen Victoria’s signature in the bottom right corner. It cost sixpence per copy and operated from 1870-1919. The Australian Town and Country Journal was printed weekly, on Saturdays, in Sydney. The edition on December 26, 1885, contained 51 pages. The Journal claimed “Circulation Ten Thousand Copies, Greater than any other Weekly in Australia.” The frame of the print has a solid back of thick timber panels and is crudely made. The edges of the frame appear to have an underlying plaster base that has been covered with a layer of wood. The corners are reinforced with metal protectors. The subject of the print is Queen Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland. She was born as Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent on May 24, 1819. She became Queen on June 24, 1837 when King William IV died. She married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on February 10, 1840. Queen Victoria lived and reigned until her death on January 22, 1901, at age 82 years, after reigning for sixty-three years and seven months. This portrait is significant historically for its origin as an inclusion the Australian Town and Country Journal, a late 19th century Australian weekly newspaper, in circulation for almost fifty years. The portrait gifted to the newspaper’s subscribers is historically significant as an example of the connection between the people in the British Colony of Australia, with the value and respect held for the Queen of the Colony. The frame of the portrait, of solid and protective construction, shows the value that the owners placed on this portrait.Print behind glass in a brown wooden frame; coloured print of a portrait of Queen Victoria, made in watercolours. The Queen is wearing a blue sash, crown, and white ribbon pinned to the sash along with a cameo brooch and Royal Emblem. The portrait has an oval floral border of roses in pastel colours. Text is printed outside the border, as a title above and a signature below, in the lower right corner. The back of the frame is made of heavy timber panels with holes for attaching wire. The timber frame is over a white layer of soft substance, perhaps plaster. Photograph - Glass plate, circa 1860
This glass plate photograph shows good detail of uniformed and armed members of the early Volunteer Corps posing for their photograph in front of a young township. There are other well-dressed citizens behind them. Perhaps this was a special ceremony or event. It is likely that the subject of the photograph was the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps from Warrnambool in the 1860s if the following assumptions are made - - The Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps was established in 1858 - the firearms held appear to be 1853 pattern Lee Enfield muskets used by the British army in Crimea at this time and in Australia, rather than the later Martini Henry cartridge rifles - The uniforms match other photos of the Warrnambool Garrison Militia and Band in our Collection, taken up until the 1880s - The three storey building in the photograph is alike to Warrnambool’s Manifold & Bostock flour mill, built in 1854 near the ‘cutting’ in Merri Street, which was one of the main streets at the time. If one faced the building’s front from a vantage point and looked south to south-east, the hills around Flagstaff Hill and Cannon Hill would be behind that mill, and the Harbour behind the hills. This is the area of the Fortifications - The glass plate method of photography was widely used during the mid-19th to early-20th century - The donor of the photograph is unknown but most likely to be a local family member Around this time the citizens of Victoria were prospering from the gold rush but felt isolated and uneasy about their security in the colony. In 1854 the Volunteer Act was passed to provide some military defence. In 1858 the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps was established, disbanded in 1863, then a new Warrnambool Detachment was formed in September 1866. Legislation was passed in 1884 that replaced the volunteers’ corps with a partly paid, permanent Militia Defence Force. The batteries manning the coastal forts of Victoria were termed Garrison Artillery Companies. When the Army was federated in 1901 there were eight Militia Companies in Victoria. Warrnambool and Port Fairy together were known as 8 Coy AGA (Australian Garrison Artillery). Changes to formation and name continued into the 20th century. This photograph is a record of the very early volunteer defence force in Victoria, showing the Militia Volunteers from the mid-19th century, likely to be the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps, which was established in 1858. The photograph signifies the connection of the colony in Victoria to the growing need for security due to the unrest in Europe at the time around the Crimean War. The photograph is also locally significant to the industry of the young township of Warrnambool, showing what is likely to be one of the first flour mills in the town. The photograph is also the only example of the early methods of glass plate photography in our collection. Photograph, rectangular glass plate, positive sepia image. Photograph has brass framed edges that fold over to the back with mitred corners. The front edges are pressed with a decorative floral pattern. The photograph shows a group of thirty military men, standing or kneeling, in dark uniforms with pillbox forage caps, round-collared jackets with light buttons, light sashes worn from top left shoulder to bottom right side of waist belt, and long, straight-legged trousers. Three of these men have light braid around the buttons on the front of their jackets, light frogging on their sleeve cuffs and stripes on the outside seams of their trousers. The other twenty-seven men have plain uniforms and are holding firearms in their right hands, steadied with their left hands. Other figures are standing behind this group of soldiers, including three or four men wearing top hats, jackets and ties. In the background is a row of buildings. The central building is three stories high. Bare hills are in the far background. The foreground is uneven ground with patches of short grass. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, glass plate, photography 19th century, colonial forces, military defence, volunteer act 1854, volunteer rifle, garrison artillery, volunteer corps, militia, militia garrison band, pillbox forage caps, 8 coy aga (australian garrison artillery), 1860, helpmann, manifold and bostock, 1853 lee enfield musket, tintype -

Craft - Ship Model, Portuguese Carvel, 1999
The Mahogany Ship is today regarded as a legend and refers to an ancient wreck that is purported to lie beneath the sand beside Armstrong Bay, several kilometres west of Warrnambool, Its location is currently unknown. For well over a century the mystery of this ship has fascinated Australians because the existence of such a vessel could throw a different light on the earliest phases of exploration of eastern Australia by Europeans. The story is that in January 1836 a party of whalers from Port Fairy travelled to the mouth of the Hopkins River in search of seals. Their boat overturned and one man was drowned. The three survivors were walking the 30 kilometres back to Port Fairy along the coast when, about halfway along, they discovered the wrecked ship in the dunes. It is said that Captain John Mills, who was in charge of the whaling station at Port Fairy promptly visited the wreck with several of his men, including Hugh Donnelly. Donnelly who was the originator of that version of events is now regarded as unreliable. Local history researcher Joan Fawcett believes Donnelly could not have visited the wreck in 1836 because he did not arrive in Victoria until 1841. The "mahogany" description can be traced to a letter from Port Fairy builder, architect and surveyor John Mason and published in the Melbourne Argus in 1876. He said he had seen the hull in 1846 and it "had the appearance of either cedar or mahogany." In 1884 Argus journalist `The Vagabond' wrote that the hull was built of "Spanish mahogany" and six years later Mason wrote another letter saying it might not have been mahogany but red gum or ironbark from New South Wales. He was too late with this new description as the wrecks mahogany tag was here to stay all through the hull was not visible as it had disappeared beneath the shifting sands by 1880. A more reliable account was later presented by the former editor of the Warrnambool Examiner, historian Richard Osburne, who wrote about the wreck in his book History of Warrnambool (published 1887). In it the author remembers to have noticed a wreck in the hummocks between Belfast and Warrnambool, in 1847 or 1848; he stated it was much nearer Warrnambool than Belfast, now known as Port Fairy, going on to state “in fact, it was only two or three miles from the former place, to the west of the big hummock which was supposed to fill Warrnambool Bay with drift sand washed by the Merri River before the cutting was made.” Osburne followed up with a letter to the Port Fairy Gazette on June 25, 1876, during a period of heightened interest in the wreck, although he was unsure of the provenance of the ship he went on to state in his letter. “The old wreck was, in fact, miles away from the Port Fairy beach, and only about four miles from Warrnambool. In the years 1847 and 1848. I have often seen the wreck and I regret to say I do not believe she was a foreign ship at all.”The ship model is significant for its association with the Warrnambool story of what is now referred to as the Mahogany Ship, an ancient shipwreck. The model is significant as it is an interpretation of a Portuguese caravel and possibly associated with the early history and exploration of Southern Australia. The model is a fine example of a hand crafted ship made from plans, not from a kit. Some of the materials used for the model are significant to the Gembrook community in that the timber used is a portion from a 30-meter pine tree that fell onto and destroyed the 120-year-old Gembrook church building. The model is also a dedication to Edward Kermond, who grew up in Warrnambool and claimed to have seen the shipwreck in the dunes when he was a lad in the late 19th century. Memorabilia - Horseshoe Case, 1906 – 1907
The horseshoes in this purpose-built display case were made by Thomas Alfred Chapman in 1906-1907. Chapman operated a blacksmith’s shop in Mortlake Rd, Purnim, about 15 mins drive from Warrnambool. Chapman made this horseshoe case especially for the 3rd Exhibition of Australian Manufacturers and Products, held in the Exhibition Building in Melbourne, which was organised and promoted by the Australian Natives Association (ANA). Reference is made to the horseshoe case in the Exhibition’s Souvenir Catalogue of 1907 on page 85, under the heading 'In the Machinery Section the following exhibits are also shown … 'CHAPMAN, T.A. , Woolsthorpe, via Warrnambool, Case of Horseshoes'. The Australian Natives’ Association (ANA) were a non-partisan and non-sectarian, friendly society founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871. It was set-up for the benefit of Australian-born white men, and membership was restricted exclusively to that group. Men of other races including the Chinese and Indigenous people were not allowed to join. The ANA had relatively progressive views on women (for the time) and attracted suffragists seeking support for their cause, and in 1894, the ANA advocated for women’s enfranchisement. Although, white women were only admitted as members from 1964. The organisation was most prominent in Victoria and sought to shape Australia’s national identity and was a training ground for businessmen, trade unionists and politicians including many of Australia’s early prime ministers such as Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin, James Scullin and Francis Forde, and the first Australian-born governor-general, Isaac Isaacs, was a member. By 1910 it had developed into a nationwide association with real political and social influence, and members would participate in many activities. The ANA lobbied strongly for anti-Chinese legislation and were an ardent believer of colonial unification. Its mission and efforts are largely credited for the successful referendums that resulted in Federation of the six Australian colonies into a new nation, the association’s most important legacy. The ANA was also a supporter of trade protection, and were a staunch advocate of the first act of Australia's new parliament, the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 (cth) or commonly known as the White Australia Policy, which became one of the central pillars of Australian nationalism in the 20th-century. The ANA campaigned against the Australian Federal Government's new immigration policy after the Second World War (non-British immigration from southern and central Europe) in order to maintain a 'white Australia', and resisted changes when the Labor government during the 1970s fully dismantled and abandoned the White Australia Policy. The ANA merged with Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, in 1993 to become Australian Unity Ltd. The display case of horseshoes changed hands several times, going from its maker Thomas Chapman to his mother then various other members of his family. The case was also displayed at the Lee Family’s butcher shop at 188 Liebig St Warrnambool, and in the Purnim Hotel during the Warrnambool May Races. In the late 1950s the horseshoe case went to Thomas’s son, Brian. He was a Master Farrier and completed his apprenticeship at Flemington Racecourse, and in Warrnambool he owned a blacksmith business at the Warrnambool Racecourse Grounds. Brian later operated a blacksmith’s at Flagstaff Hill, where his customers would bring their horses to be shod. Brian passed away in August 2017. The horseshoe case is significant as an example of trades in the early 20th century in Western Victoria, Australia. It is also significant as an example of horseshoes from the early 20th century. The horseshoe display case is also significant for its association with the Australian Exhibition of 1907, showcasing Australian produce and manufacturing to the world. The horseshoe display case is locally significant for its association with local families, essential businesses and community events. Display case of homemade horseshoes.
