Administrative record - Factory Order Book
The item is a hard cover book recording daily work of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each handwritten page records the customer orders by date, name and goods supplied. Some entries include more detailed descriptions and small drawings. The cardboard cover is green with red and brown marbling on both front and back with some wearing at the corners. "B S GOODS" is hand drawn in black on the front cover, with a paper rectangle stuck over the top on which is handwritten the type of book and dates. The pages are bound together with string. The book includes the date range of 20 August 1894 to 12 November1895. All pages have been used. This item is part of the Margaret Roberts Collection. "B S GOODS" is hand drawn in large black capital letters across the front cover, with a brown paper rectangle stuck over the top on which is handwritten "Factory Order Book From Aug 20/94 to Nov 12th 1895". Also, on the front cover there are some ink spots between the D and S and other pen marks around the G, including mathematical workings (18 +13 = 31). Robert Spear Hudson (d. 1884) invented the first dry soap powder in 1837 and called it extract of soap. Following his death the company was taken over by his son and later (1908) sold to Lever Bros. a subsidiary of Uni lever. Thomas Dicker, Rowan Street, Bendigo, published a monthly mining journal that included geological information, mine details and mining practises for particular mining districts. In 1868/9, Dicker moved to England to open the "Australian and London Mining Agency" with the goals of promoting investment in Victorian mines, entering Victorian mining shares on the London Stock market, and exploring the latest in mining technology that might be suitable for mining in Victoria.Dicker's Mining Record and guide to the gold mines of Victoria, showing the bearings, depths, thickness, dips and underlies of the auriferous lodes; the progress and cost of works in operation; containing also a variety of valuable interesting and statistical information. Published by the proprietor, Thomas Dicker, Rowan Street Sandhurst. A green with black spine hardcover book. Paper glued on the front with the title Dicker's Mining Journal 1862. On the spine in gold lettering Dicker's Mining Record Vol.1 1861-2. The book contains 12 issues of the Dicker's Mining Record, the first from Saturday, November 23, 1861: the last from October 24, 1862. Also, there are two pieces of paper inside front cover with writing in pencil; the first says: shaft originally No.3 shaft of the speedwell coy. in 1902 the North Normanby Coy. was formed and took over the shaft. Functional object - Fare Tokens - 2021, 2021
... the token to the Conductor or Driver who issues a paper ticket... or Driver who issues a paper ticket. Tokens are: Green - 1/- Adult ...Design based on the Electric Supply Co of Victoria tokens. Used by the Museum as a fare payment mechanism or system. With the use of coins or banknotes being phased out and replaced by digital means, it is not possible for the traditional fare payment system to be demonstrated by conductors or tram crews. Maintains the mechanism or practice of exchanging a "coin" for a tram ticket. Visitors pay an entry fee at the new Museum and are given a token for each person. When ready for a tram ride, each passenger gives the token to the Conductor or Driver who issues a paper ticket. Tokens are: Green - 1/- Adult, blue - 6d - Child, red - 3d - concession, purple 1d - members and guests, and orange - no value - baby or under 4. Also maintains the traditional system of conductors accounting for tokens (or cash) and the number of tickets issued.Demonstrates a fare payment system that maintains a strong interpretative link to traditional methods for visitors.Set of 5 plastic fare tokens used by the Ballarat Tramway Museum manufactured during 2021. Album, Alick Kirkland Goulburn Gipps' Scrapbook, 1930s
Alick Gipps (1928-2014) was the son of Richard Brook Woodthorpe Gipps (1872-1946) and Mary Alys Kirkland (1889-1981), and the older brother of Christopher David Gipps (1930-52) and Rosemary Alison Gipps (1930-2013). While many scrapbooks of the period were created by, and or added to by their child owners, it is believed that "scrapbooks were considered by later Victorian parents to be an educational tool to teach children how to organise and classify information and to develop their ‘artistic’ senses" (Margaret Simpson, MAAS, 2008), and that the scrapbooks may have been compiled by the parent, rather than the child.The scrapbook is part of a large and significant collection of items donated by Rosemary Vaughan-Smith, past member and office-bearer of the Kew Historical Society. between 2005-12. The collection includes costumes, scrapbooks, autograph books, artworks and objects.Hard cover, 50-page album covered in red cloth and red leather corners and spine, the latter embossed with the words 'SCRAP BOOK' in gilt lettering. On the inside front cover, top left is an oval green label with retailer information - "WEDDING CHRISTENING / R. E. PENN. / Bible Warehouse / 213 REGENT St / BIRTHDAY PRESENTS". The paper used for the pages are in alternating blue, cream and green-coloured sections. The front pages of the scrapbook include the signature of the owner as Alick Kirkland [Goulburn] Gipps (1928-2014). Items pasted into the scrapbook include black and white and coloured illustrations, photographs, and extracts from books. Items selected for the scrapbook fill a single page or are arranged in groups. The oldest items in the scrapbook appear to date from 1859 and include a colour cover of the Illustrated London Almanack and pictorial handbills of electoral results for the seat of Holmesdale and Filmer in Kent, England. While other items in the book are of later periods, most can be classified as sentimental Victorian-era illustrations. The biblical scenes in the scrapbook reflect one aspect of the values of the Gipps family. The focus in the album on material about or published in Great Britain also suggests a preoccupation with, and a valuing of, traditional British culture. This is confirmed by the memberships of Alick and his sister Rosemary (Gipps) Vaughan-Smith in the English-Speaking Union Club, for which they welcomed guests at an 'Elizabethan party and barbecue' during the Coronation festivities of June 1953. Accessory - Woman's Visiting Card Case, 19th century
Calling cards, also called visiting cards, visiting tickets, or compliments cards, originated in their paper and ink form in France in the 18th century and their popularity quickly spread across Europe and the United Kingdom. Victorian calling cards were large and could be extremely ornate, with the names usually printed instead of handwritten. Women's cards were squarish and fairly large, usually about 2.5 x 3 inches. Men's cards were smaller and more rectangular, meant to fit in a breast pocket, while women often carried their cards in specially made cases of silver, tortoiseshell, ivory, or mother-of-pearl. The case has a tooled brown leather cover attached to a silver frame. The interior of the card case, used for visiting cards, is lined with maroon silk with brown leather pockets. For over 60 years, the Society has worked with local government and other community organisations to stimulate interest in Kew’s history and heritage. Journal - Visitor Book, Fairyland 1959-1960
"Fairyland", the home of Jim and Grace Tabulo, was a major local, state and international tourist attraction situated in Kew, Victoria during the mid twentieth century. Located at 57 Malmsbury Street, Kew, the weatherboard house and its garden were heavily decorated with statues, crockery and other collected items. A series of notebooks were used to record the messages of child and adult visitors to the property from the 1940s to the 1960s. After Mrs Tabulo's death, these visitor books are believed to have formed part of the Dorothy Rogers Collection. They entered the Kew Historical Society's collection following her death in 1973.This series of visitor books are the most important primary sources relating to the internationally renowned 'Fairyland' cottage in Malmsbury Street, Kew. Their social significance is that they record in the post war period the values and beliefs of children and adults who visited this historically significant tourist attraction.Foolscap visitor book and containing handwritten comments and drawings primarily made by children during visits to the home of Grace Tabulo, May 1959- August 1960. Commonly known as "Fairyland", the house was located at 57 Malmsbury Street Kew. The book is wrapped in brown paper, which covers blue and red card covers with green cloth strip binding. Decorative object - Large mid-Victorian silk patchwork quilt, 1850-1860
A silk patchwork quilt in a hexagons pattern originally owned by the Denbigh family of ‘Wimba’. The Denbigh family is recorded as living at ‘Park Villa’ ‘near Kew’ in 1856. John Denbigh was at this stage the superintendent of the local Baptist school. By 1869 they are listed as residing in Cotham Road. John Sharp Denbigh’s death in 1875 resulted in the sale of Wimba. This is an important early English silk hexagons quilt with outstanding technical workmanship, and is well-provenanced.The quilt is constructed in the popular hexagon pattern of silk off-cuts of an earlier period. Hexagon patchwork quilts were typically constructed of individual hexagons, which were formed using paper or card templates. Where these are visible, it would indicate that writing paper was used to form the templates. The quilt is unlined and has a green silk border, added at a later date. Early 19th Century patchwork quilts tended to use cotton to create the hexagons, whereas silk became the preferred medium mid-century. The quilt has been dated to the middle decades of the 19th century due to the colour range, and the exclusion of black silk hexagons. Most of the silk used in the quilt has a sheen, however there is some use of velvet in one or two larger hexagons. Leisure object - Magnetic Toy, Fishing, 1950s
The Kew Historical Society’s collection includes a wide range of leisure objects. Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. There were clearly a huge range of toys produced for the Australian and International children’s market in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. The examples of toys in the collection include examples of alphabet toys, arcade toys, baby toys, construction toys, dolls, doll accessories, educational toys, soft toys, tin toys, toy animals, toy blocks, toy machines, toy typewriters, etc. Four miniature paper fish that have multicoloured stripes. Each fish has a piece of metal in its mouth. The other part of the game is two tiny wooden fishing rods with cotton attached to metal rods. The aim of the game is to attach a rod to a fish.
