The earliest item dates from 1964, and is a letter from W. D. Birrell, Town Clerk to the Secretary of the Historical Society. The file also includes a National Trust of Victoria listing of classified buildings as of 1981. The most interesting documents in the file are the City of Kew Heritage Advice Note 1-4, compiled in 1991 and which provides advice on Protecting Heritage through Planning, Victorian Buildings, Edwardian Buildings, and 1930s-1940s houses. He was the first European cartographer to map the lower reaches of the Yarra River. The reference file contains both research on the ‘exploration’ by Grimes as well as information on a re-enactment, sponsored by the Kew Historical Society in 1978, to mark the 175th year of his party’s arrival in the area of what is now Dight’s Falls. In the file is a 13-page handwritten document to be used as a script for a speech during the reenactment, which also includes details of the costumes to be worn. There are additional unpublished manuscripts in the file about Grimes and his ‘journey’ by Mr Chinner and Mavis Rolley. Its constitution, which is filed, is general in nature. One part of the Association’s interests was the formation of a Historical Working Group to ‘examine historic buildings and other aspects of Kew’s history’. A founding member of the Society, Joy Stewart, was its convenor. By June 1974 it had 133 members. It differed from the Society in that it specifically aimed to improve Council services. One of its achievements was to begin a ‘historical home survey’ by street. The survey documents in the file list street name, number of house, side of street, size of house and general observations. Other information in the archive file includes correspondence, agendas, minutes etc. of the Association.
