The original St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church (1865-1912) was built of clay brick with buttress walls and a slate roof on the corner of Fordhams Road and Maria Street (Main Road), Eltham South, opposite the present-day Wingrove Park. It was blessed on September 3, 1865. With the arrival of the railway in 1901 and the town centre moving closer to the station, the decision was made to relocate the site of the church to its present-day location on Henry Street at the corner of Main Road. A new timber weatherboard church, also called St Mary's was erected and blessed on October 13, 1912. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The original brick church was demolished in the 1920s and the bricks and windows were recycled to build a dairy on the Brinkkotter farm at Research. A Victorian F-class steam locomotive and passenger train at Eltham Railway Station, c.1904 Intending passengers were able to walk down from the Main Road straight onto the railway platform as the station initially only had tracks on the far side. The rail yard and storage shed for heavy goods is across the tracks. The platform shed-like building is best seen in the 1910 and 1912 photographs. The Victorian Railways F class locomotives were built in 1874 (the pattern engine), 1876–77 and 1879–80 by Beyer, Peacock & Company and the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat as 2-4-0 tender locomotives. They were normally used on passenger trains. In 1911 the Victorian Railways decided to convert seven of them into "motor" locomotives. These became 2-4-2 tanks. They kept their numbers 172–184 (evens only). The unrebuilt tender engines were taken off register between 1916 and 1922. The "motors" were taken off register between 1920 and 1929. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. Melbourne High School originally opened in 1905 at the top of Spring Street (where the Australasian College of Surgeons building is now located). The school was co-educational and was the first state secondary school in Victoria. It was originally named the Melbourne Continuation School. The intention was to cover the gap between state schools (which may have had classes up to year 8) and the University of Melbourne, hence the expression ‘Continuation’. Prior to 1905, post year 8 or secondary education was the sole domain of private church schools.  Melbourne High School took over the Model School building, which was constructed in 1854. The Model School closed at the end of 1904. The first Melbourne High School Principal was Joseph Hocking. In 1927, the boys moved out to the new ‘castle’ school building at Forrest Hill, South Yarra. The boys actually marched from Spring Street to South Yarra to their new building. The trowel was used by Dr W A Sloss when he set the foundation stone for the new boarding school wing at Clarendon College, Webster Street site, on 22 September 1956. The builing of this wing enabled up to 100 boarders to be accommodated on the Webster Street property. Dr Sloss had been one of the school trustees; at the time of the building project he was Deputy Chairman of the school Council; he was also the school medical advisor for many years. In 1972 Men's Auxilliary was disbanded and replaced with a new committee to be called The Minerva Association. Promoted in Ring-a-roo April 1972 the new association was 1) to further the welfare of College, 2) to encourage social contact between all members of the school community and 3) to promote major fund raising projects which may be beyond the means of the separate auxiliaries or the Old Collegians' Association. The Ladies' Auxiliary and the Old Collegians Association continued to exist. In 1988 the Minerva Association changed its name to the Ballarat and Clarendon College Parents' and Friends' Association. (see Ring-a-roo March 1988). The honour board emphasizes the degree to which the school was grateful for the voluntary work expended on behalf of the school by parents and friends of its community.Solid wood with two relief boards. The plaque was erected at the Mair Street campus following amalgamation of the two schools in 1974. The senior campus was established with the express aim of encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning (Golden heritage p. 274). Adult students also attended business school at this campus. The 1989 school evaluation report recommended the return of senior students to the Sturt Street campus and the Mair Street property catered for Kindergarten to Grade 6. The honour board represents a significant era of the school's development and its continued openess to new ideas and disciplines for learning. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) these boards were co-opted to honour Middle School Dux and Junior Captains. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. This librarian's chair was given to the school by the family of Joy Chapman who had died during 1948. The chair was part of a number of furnishings supplied by donation for the new library which was opened in 1949. These included blackwood shelves, tables and chairs and a new set of Encycopedia Britannica supplied by the Parents and Friend's Association, a grooved periodical table given by Old Collegians Younger Set, a librarian's desk supplied by the E M Bell estate and more than 200 books supplied by the Old Collegians. (see 'A lamp burns brightly' p. 61). This item is a significant example of the degree to which the school relied on donations from the community to develop the school during the post-war years.
