Gives a short history of the cable tramway that operated from Milsons Point ferry terminus until replaced by electric tramcars, photographs, map, and a short note on preserved cable trams. Shows the details of buildings in the east end of Sturt St, c1916.Digital image from a postcard from the collection of David Critchley, of Ballarat, Sturt St c1916. This 'birds eye' view of Sturt St reveals on of the early fleet standing at the city terminus probably during the Great War. Note the absence of motor cars and women's skirts are somewhat shorter - an economy concession with the shortage of cloth during the war years. A Valentines photo postcard. David scanned this pic at a higher resolution than normal, so you should be able to zoom in on the tram, which has been fitted with windshields and looks typically well used and unloved as did most of the original Ballarat fleet in their latter years. Black and White print of Bendigo SECV Bendigo tram 18 at Charing Cross terminus for the Eaglehawk route with a single truck car crossing behind heading for Golden Square. Trams have dash canopy lights, but no large white strip under the drivers windows. Photo not dated but appears to be at during early 1960's. Tram 18 has White Horse Whiskey ad on front dash panel, SEC Roof ad "Electricity best for Cooking" and a "CASTROL" ad, and showing destination of "Eaglehawk". Single truck car has SEC roof ad "You'll Cook better electrically" and a roof ad for "B.J. Osborn Plumbing Service" ad. Has City Club Hotel and Plaza Theatre buildings in background.
