Melbourne hospitals also sent patients there who required further care after discharge from hospital. After convalescence they returned to their homes. Many children were nursed there, particularly during the Polio epidemic.The Society were pioneers in recognizing the need for premises where patients too ill to be in their own home, but not ill enough to go to hospital, was needed, and the Society built, then opened, the After-Care Home in 1926, (from 1934 called After-Care Hospital), for these patients, and patients from Hospitals. Many children were nursed there, some long term, during the Polio epidemic and the Society employed two School Teachers. The Society now ran two divisions, the After-Care with its own Trained nurses and the District division. The Society were the first in Melbourne, in early 1928, to recognize some patients leaving the After-Care, and many at home, needed further social care and they set up ‘Almoners’ from their Committee to visit these patients and be intermediaries in getting them social assistance. It was late the following year before the first training of Almoners took place in Melbourne. In 1930 the Society employed a full time kindergarten teacher to visit poor children in their homes. That year the Society were pioneers in opening an Ante-Natal Clinic at the After-Care, setting a high standard with equipment, keeping records and providing leaflets with instructions in how to keep healthy during pregnancy, what complications to look for, and what to do when labour commenced. In 1934 the Society were pioneers again when they opened the first Women’s Welfare Clinic in Melbourne giving advice on birth-control, at first attended by their own patients, but then accepting patients from public hospitals until their own clinics were opened. A trained Almoner was employed, but left after twelve months due to the amount of work required. Trained Almoners were in short supply so a Social Service Officer was employed at the After-Care who successfully gained better housing from the Housing Commission for families living under unsuitable conditions. In the 1950s the Hospital and Charities Commission decided to take over the After-Care Hospital, so the Melbourne District Nursing Society and After-Care Hospital separated and the Melbourne District Nursing Service was formed, setting up Headquarters at 452 St. Kilda Road. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Reverend Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1905 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The main building fronted 219-233 Union Road. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. Land in front of the building was sub-divided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. This photo is one of two that were originally in the Box Hill Historical Society collection. They were transferred to us in 2024. The third photo could not be located. There was also a rough family tree and notes for the Downton family with correspondence regarding the donation but this was not found.Sepia photograph on grey mount board of 15 men and boys. Clock components - comprising two springs and part of the pendulum of the Bundy Clock in the Training Room during the refurbishment of the clock by Graeme Coates during 2019. Returned to the depot 4/9/2019. Found that the springs were too strong for the mechanism - they have been secured with plastic cable ties - do not undo they could cause serious injury. The pendulum was too long - shortened by 72mm, consists of an oval shaped piece of wood and sealed. Notes from Graeme: 1 - wind both springs at the same time 2 - always wind the hands forward to adjust the time 3 - the timing mechanism can be set by hand, the time is on the opposite side to that shown on the case.trams, tramways, bundy clock

Sandra Pullman visited the Melbourne City Council Exhibition, 'Melbourne Parks and Gardens Through the Magic Lantern' in November 2012. Lex Nieboer, former Burnley student graduating in 1975, found a large number of glass lantern slides in a store room and took them home as he was concerned they would be thrown out. His family has a long tradition of being involved in photography, so he understood the value of the slides. He donated the ones that were of Melbourne City Parks and Gardens to the Council and they used them in their exhibition. Sandra contacted Lex and arranged with Jane Wilson (Archivist) to visit Lex on 12 April, 2013 at Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick where he works. After Lex showed them the slides, he, very generously, donated approximately 300 slides back to the Burnley Archives. There was already a collection of almost 100 glass slides in the Archives. They were in a wooden box containing glass lantern slides with label on outside, "Slides of Horticultural Objects and Views." Inside lid is handwritten, "Mr Bailey Botanic Gardens Adelaide." (John Frederick Bailey, Director Adelaide Botanic Gardens 1917-1932.) and, "Mr Isaac 9 pla? 2 ficifolia." (Probably Mr Isaacs Mayor of Adelaide 1917.) Also, "Purchased from Estate of Reeves Late Malvern Gardens, AWJ." (F.L. Reeves, Malvern Council's Park Curator in the 1920's died in 1933. AWJ, A.W. Jessep, Principal Burnley Horticultural College 1926-1941.) These were numbers 61-85 "History of the Rose." Geoff Olive, former Staff member, remembered taking a number of glass slides to a photographic processor to have 35mm slides made from them. 60 of these are also in this collection. Goongerah is a community on the Brodribb River, located in Gippsland, Australia, north of Orbost. The town's population is about sixty. The first three issues were free and it was published monthly.Local newspapers play a vital role in the communities they are based in. Community newspapers provide a forum for expression. They allow readers to make their voices heard, and they enable ordinary citizens to deliberate on the future of their community. They may also boost the local economy – both through advertising or news coverage. It is likely that the people who produce these newspapers work and live in the communities they cover and understand the issues they write about.Sixty-four copies of a newsletter, titled The Local Rag,published at Goongerah, about 70km north of Orbost. It is a local newsletter containing articles, photographs, advertisements and information. It was printed monthly from 1979 - 1985. This item was worn by Marjorie Burton during summer holidays in Croyde,a village on the west-facing coastline of North Devon, England. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made many of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the handcraft skills of women during the mid 20th century.A pale hand-stitched torquoise coloured cotton bikini set. The bottoms are briefs and elasticated at the front. They have high rise leg openings . The top is a bra style with a strap pinned at the centre of the back with a gold safety pin and stitched at the shoulders to loop over. The Stormbird was built in Southport Tasmania in 1874 and was originally a steamer registered in Hobart. 1876. It was re-registered many times with different owners: William Fergusson & S.Reeves, reg. Port Adelaide; 1878: G.McKay, C.Heath & J.Yeo; 1883: G.S.Simmonds. It made regular voyages from Port Victoria. In 1893 on November14 Stormbird sank at her wharf, near Honey Street, after being struck by the Tenterden. It was raised (29 Nov) & repaired.In 1902. It was registered to A.Le Messurier. In 1904 it was registered to J.& A.Tainsh. This certificate is the record of registration for George Tainsh, a master mariner, Alice Thompson, a widow and John Tainsh, master mariner. 1922. The Stormbird was eventually lost on a voyage Madang to Wewak with the loss of two lives. This was after 1968. It had been changed to a sailing ship with an auxiliary engine in 1938.This certificate is a useful research tool and is a valuable source of information on maritime history.A small, blue folder containing a certificate of British Registry for the ship "Stormbird". Black text with additional hand-written details in red added in 1938. The certificate gives details of size, tonnage and engine. Donated by Mrs Catherine Ah Chow. A roughly improvised metal knuckle duster which is made of iron with cord wound around a metal shaft. A "U" shaped piece fits onto either end of the shaft. Presumably, a person's hand clasps the cord wound shaft and the metal "U" piece is for inflicting damage to the opponent in a fight.

It has a funnel shaped cup at the top through which the pieces of meat are pushed to come out of the side. The wooden handle is turned to help this action. It has one blade. This table linen was bought from the Indian hawker, Budda Dean, by Henry Powell for his daughter, Ruth, to start her "glory box" on her 18th birthday. Selina Jane Powell and Henry James Powell had daughters, Ruth (married Roy Cope), Ethel (married Dan Locke). The family came to Orbost from Bega around 1902.This item is an example of a fine piece of linen commonly used in the first half of the 20th century..1 is a square table cloth. The centre is linen and the edges are crocheted in cotton. It appears to be hand-made. .2 is a rectangular tea towel or cloth.
