Established in 1870, the National (renamed the Royal in 1890) Agricultural Society of Victoria, uses 'Speed the Plough' as its motto which is embossed on the medal. The engraved part of this medal reads “City of Caulfield Horticultural Display 1981, 1st Prize".Round, gold plated medal measuring 50mm in diameter with "The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria" embossed around edge, an engraved central plate with an embossed representation of a sheep above and cattle below. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents proposals put forward by Bob Hymans to develop facilities in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.This letter to the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee contains Mr Hymans' application to establish one or the other of two proposals at Falls Creek. Proposal A was for the installation and operation of a double Chairlift with drive station at the top as well as the establishment and operation of an observation lounge and restaurant facilities at the top station. Proposal B was for the establishment and operation of an accommodation building. In either scheme, all patrons of the restaurant would have a panoramic view of the Valley Chairlift and every skiing slope through uninterrupted glass walls. Information regarding structure details and tariffs is included. The capital expenditure was expected to exceed £220.000 for Scheme A or £45,000 for Scheme B. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was established with a meeting called in April 1862 and over the ensuing months a congregation with first pastor Rev W Pentland was established. After initially meeting at the small Temperence Hall in Liebig St, land was purchased at the corner of Liebig and lava St and the first church opened in March 1864. It remained on this site until the site was sold to the T & G Assurance in 1939 and land known as Kianga Estate was purchased on the corner of Lava and Henna Streets.It became part of the amalgamation with other churches to form the Uniting Church in 1977.This cup is possibly a souvenir from the 50th anniversary celebrations held in 1912. This book belonged to John Cowtan. He was a purchaser of land near Cassady’s Bridge in Warrnambool and an important and early settler in Port Fairy. The land that John Cowtan selected was bought by Williaam Cassady whose sister, Ann, was married to John Cowtan. Cassady established the property, Boughton where Cassady’s Bridge is today. This book came from a Cassady estate sale early in the 21st century. Between 1839 and 1844 John Cowtan was a ship’s captain for John Griffiths, a shipowner and entrepreneur. In 1844 Cowtan established a merchant trading and produce business in Port Fairy with John Bland. In the 1860 John Cowtan went to live in Melbourne.This book is of great interest because of its early date (one year after the founding of Warrnambool) and because of its association with John Cowtan, a pioneer settler of Port Fairy with connections to Warrnambool.This is a brown leather cover book of 385 pages. The spine has gold lettering. The binding has come apart and has been mended with white cotton material on the inside of the cover. The insides of the cover have a brown, white, blue and yellow mottled pattern. The cover is stained and torn at the edges and has a deep gouging on the front. The first page has been torn and mended with tape and some of the pages are stained. There are two pressed fern fronds, one loose newspaper cutting and a bookmark with a sepia-coloured image, lace paper edges and coloured embroidery contained within the pages. This medal was made by W.J.Amor Mint, a medal making company from New South Wales. It was made to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Canberra in 1963 and the Royal Visit of 1963. Because of the rivalry between the two major Australian cities, Melbourne and Sydney, it was decided to establish a new capital city somewhere between the two cities. The Australian capital Territory was established in 1913 and the American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, was chosen to design the new city of Canberra. The first Parliament House was opened in 1927 and Melbourne ceased to be the location of the Federal Parliament meetings.This medal is of interest, mainly because it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first Parliament House in Canberra and the establishment of Canberra as Australia's capital city.Circular brass medal with ring attached at the top and a split ring through the ring. This blazer was worn by a Warrnambool Fire Brigade member (Jack Sizeland). It was part of the dress uniform for fire brigade members in the 1960s and 70s. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was established in the early 1860s after a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street prompted a public meeting to establish a permanent fire authority in the town. There had been a couple of attempts previously to set up a local fire brigade. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade actively participates in Country Fire Authority Championships and competitions and has been very successful, particularly in the 19th century. John (Jack) Sizeland retired when he was 65 in 1977 (37 years of service).This blazer is of interest as it shows us what fire fighters in Warrnambool were wearing in the mid 20th century (dress uniform). It is also a memento of one long-serving firefighter, Jack SizelandThis is a man’s black blazer with three large black buttons. The sleeve ends and the three pockets have a diagonal red and black patterned braid stitched on. The upper portion of the blazer and the sleeves are lined with black material. The top pocket has the badge of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade in red and yellow stitched on. The badge features a Fire Brigade helmet, a ladder and two axes set in two concentric circles. Charlemont & Co., operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Her business also lasted until the 1920s, albeit changed to that of a bookseller and stationer. Silver albumen cabinet card by Charlemont & Co., who operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. In this portrait of Mrs Merritt, she is posed gazing directly at the lens, thus achieving a potentially more intimate relationship with the viewer. All that is revealed however in this supposedly more direct pose is her face. As with an earlier generation, her hair is centrally parted and flattened to accommodate her bonnet, which is surmounted by feathers. The detail in her coat-dress is sharply revealed by new photographic processes that allowed firms like Charlemont & Co., to capture greater light and shade, as well as the detail of fabrics. The entire garment is beaded with what is probably Parisian jet. The beading is arranged in a ‘paisley’ design. The paisley pattern was to become ubiquitous in the 19th century as a design on everything from carpets, to shawls, to clothing.Mrs Merrittcharlemont & co., mrs merritt

This docket from the firm of Stephen Holgate and Co. of Ballarat gives details of this firm’s sale in 1916 of nine bullocks on behalf of Joseph Tilley of ‘Aringa’ of Port Fairy. The sale yielded £215-15-0 and, with costs of £14-12-2, the profit for Joseph Tilley was £201-2-10. Stephen Holgate established his auctioneering firm in Ballarat in the late 19th century and was an authority on sheep and cattle breeding. Joseph Tilley was farming at ‘Aringa’ in the early 20th century and also owned the Penshurst Hotel. ‘Aringa’, five miles west of Port Fairy on the Portland Road, was established by John Ritchie in 1839.This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1916 sale of cattle with the names Joseph Tilley and Stephen Holgate of interest. It gives us the prices for bullocks in 1916 and the type of receipt forms used at that time.This is an original receipt for an account sale of 1916. The docket is a printed one from the firm of Stephen Holgate and Co. of Ballarat with printed blue and red lines for entering the details of the sale. The client’ s name is typed in blue type and the details of the sale are handwritten. On the back of the docket: ‘Wm Delaney from Lin Shoppee’ ‘1916’aringa, joseph tilley, stephen holgate and co.

George Houghton established his camera business in London in the 19th Century and sold cameras all over the world.This camera would have been used by a professional photographer in the early 20th Century. It was British made and used extensively in Australia. This camera has no known local provenance but is retained as an interesting example of early photography in 20th Century Australia.This is a folding camera for professional use. It has a concertina mechanism that folds back into a leather case. The lens board can be tilted and the lenses can be changed. The case has a leather handle. The colonies of Australia were federated into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 The first parliament was held in Melbourne in May, 1901. In the newly established capital of Australia, Canberra, the federal parliament sat in 1927. This of minor interest as a memento of the centenary of Australian Federation.This is a gold coloured metal stylised map of Australia and a star . The Port of Portland opened in 1959. Straight after the Mission had the desire to establish a Mission at this location. A building was found in November 1961 on Cliff Road (AR 1961). After alterations and renovations, it was officially dedicated and opened the 30 June 1962.
