Decorative quilt made by SGSC staff. Each department contributed a decorated fabric square which represented what that department did. The body of the quilt features these decorated squares in between plain blue and green squares. Orange fabric border. Backed with calico and hemmed with a wood dowel hanging rod upper edge. Four plain white squares with the council logo in the centre are includes in the top and bottom rows.

This case was used by Captain Charles Arblaster, a graduate of the Royal Military College Duntroon, who served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli where he was wounded and evacuated to the United Kingdom for treatment. He returned to Egypt and transferred to the 53rd Infantry Battalion and proceeded to the Western Front where he was wounded and taken prisoner of war at Fromelles on 20 July 1916 and died of wounds four days later. He was aged 21. His personal effects were returned to his family in this case. His diary was transcribed by Doug Hunter in 1997 and the original returned to the donor.A rare example of an officer's trunk used in WWI. It is well provenanced and of particular significance to his family, it being the case in which his personal effects were returned following his death. These trousers are part of a Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps uniform. The Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC) is responsible for various logistics and organisational operations, such as maintenance of parachutes, fuel distribution, personnel administration, exlosive disposal and laundy operations. The trousers were manufactured in 1969 and were worn by an unknown RAAOC serviceman. The patches on the sleeves of the corresponding jacket denote that he had earned qualifications as a parachuter and a marksman and that he was a Warrant Officer 1. Due to the period of manufacture it can be presumed that the serviceman whom this uniform belonged to served in the Vietnam War.As historic military uniform trousers dating to 1968, it is presumed that this item would have been used in service during the Vietnam War. The wearer of the uniform is unknown, however the patches and flashes attached signify that the serviceman worked for the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps, earned qualifications as a parachuter and marksman and ranked highly as a Warrant Officer 1. The item is representative of a type of uniform worn by high ranking RAAOC servicemen during the 1960’s. It is also in very good condition for its age.khaki coloured trousers which are composed of a heavy fabric. The trousers button up at the front with 6 plastic buttons. There is an additional strip of fabric attached to the right-hand fly which can be fastened with an extra button on the interior of the left-hand fly. There are an additional 6 buttons along the interior waistband. There are also three buttons on the exterior waistband down the front and a buckle. The buttons are composed of brown plastic. There are two open hip pockets, one on either side, and another button-up pocket on the right-hand side of the back. There is a white label with inscriptions attached to the interior of the back pocket with an extra piece of fabric attached for mending patches.Printed in black inscriptions on the white label: CONWAY BROS. The Orbost Rifle Club existed in the early 20th century. (There are records from 1900). It folded in the late 1970's.Target shooting is one of the oldest organised sports in Australia. Records date back to the British Marines at Sydney Cove in 1788. The Victorian Rifle Association (VRA) was formed in 1860. One of the most important adjuncts to the militia system from 1903 to the re-organisation of 1912 was the role played by the Rifle Club movement in Australia. At the time, these clubs were seen as the reservoir of manpower for a potential guerrilla force should any invasion occur. For Australia, the invasion fear was uppermost in the minds of the population. So important were the rifle clubs for the defence of Australia that the Commonwealth provided the training staff, rifles and ammunition so the clubs could function. Members were drilled, wore uniforms and practised all the basic skills of soldiering as well as target shooting. The flag represents The Mission to Seafarers worldwide organisation. From about the year 2000 particular flag was once flown from Flagstaff Hill's masthead on top of the turret on the St Nicholas Seamen's Church but this practice ceased around 2010 for safety reasons. The Australian beginnings were in 1856 when the Church of England (Anglican Church) established the ‘Society for Promoting Missions to Seamen Afloat, at Home and Abroad. Lord Shaftesbury was the first President and Mr William Kingston was the first Secretary. Its Constitution declared: (1)) the Object is the spiritual welfare of the seafaring classes at home and abroad. (2) In pursuance of this Object, Society will use every means consistent with the principles and received practice of the Church of England. Mr Kingston’s wife and sister designed a flag to clearly depict the Society’s Objects. It depicted the first of the three angels in Revelation 14, who possessed ‘an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. The ‘Flying Angel’ (the angel of Revelation) became the official logo of the Society and gained great popularity. In July 2000 the Missions to Seamen changed its name to the Mission to Seafarers to better reflect the group's function, an unbiased society that cares for all who earn their living at sea. The Logo was modernised and simplified, the word changed to 'seafarer' to be gender-neutral. The angel logo no longer holds a book (Bible). The organisation states: “The Mission to Seafarers is an Anglican organisation ... The Mission offers fellowship and a warm welcome in centres where seafarers can relax away from their ships, meet local people and contact their homes, from ports around the world. The Mission provides and promotes” … “The Mission to Seafarers now has a presence in 200 ports in 50 countries worldwide. This makes us the largest sea-port-based welfare organisation in the world. We provide support to seafarers 365 days per year, regardless of their rank, nationality, gender or religion” This flag was a gift from the Mission to Seafarers Victoria at the time of the organisation's change of name from the Missions to Seamen. It was flown from the Masthead on top of the turret on the St Nicholas Seamen's Church at Flagstaff Hill from the years 2000 to around 2010. The donation of this flag signifies the ongoing association between the historical organisation and St Nicholas Seamen's Church building at Flagstaff Hill', which displays an extensive collection of furniture and furnishings from that organisation's Williamstown branch. During World War II, over 22,000 Australian became prisoners of war to the Japanese. Most of them were captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and were forced to march to Changi (the major Prisoner of War camp). Later on, the soldiers would be dispersed throughout South East Asia. Upon their return to Australia, very few of them told talked about their experience as prisoners (they often felt ashamed). It took almost 30 years before testimonies, books and documentaries would be published.
