Functional Object - Leather folder, 1960's
Two pieces of heavy brown leather about 4mm thick joined together with a lighter piece of brown leather glued and stitched with heavy thread to form a Trip Way Bill Holder for use on the SEC trams by Conductors. The outside of the folder has been tanned to give a dark brown tan. The inside of the folder has been stained light brown. The outer corners of the folder have been rounded. The folder has been scribed by a tool to give the item some presentation. Not known who made it, could have been SEC Depot Ballarat, upholstery workers.On the inside in the top left hand corner "Trip Way Bill Holder" in blue ink. Also written marks on the leather in the bottom left hand corner - probably from the leather supplier.trams, tramways, conductors, tickets, forms, trip waybills -

Booklet with blue Rexene cover and round corners on heavy card with sheet of paper glued on inside of covers and 32 printed pages stapled with in, titled "Instruction for the Guidance of Employees working on or within reach of Live Low Voltage Conductors". Also possibly known as the "L.V. Blue Book" - see top of definitions page. Dated 1949. Above title has name of the organisation - SECV - Electricity Supply Department. Inside front cover has space to record name and occupation of person issued to. In bottom left hand corner has form number "596-210 R2" Has been stamped "L. J. Denmead" by a hand stamped in blue ink and words "Departmental Tramway Supt." written in using blue ink. See image file 1854i2.jpg Book details procedure and rules for SEC employees working on or near low voltage conductors or Powerlines. Covers general matters, authorised employees, work on low voltage overhead lines, moving a conductor near live wires, public lighting, radio and carrier circuits, batteries, portable equipment, metering work on consumer premises, and definitions. Consists of 32 pages sheets of paper, printed and folded with one staple centrally and then stapled into the covers with paper inside pasted onto cover. Contents pages are not numbered. Functional Object - Employee's Pass, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 20/08/2001 12:00:00 AM
Dark green cloth enveloping two pieces of cardboard, joined together with the cloth, printed on the outside with the MMTB logo and the words "Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board / EMPLOYEE'S PASS / 1947". On the inside, two pre printed pieces of off white paper have been glued to the cloth covered cards. The top card has been over stamped using a hand stamp machine with the Number "8478" and overprinted in purple ink " ' 47". Space for the name of the employee, occupation and for authorising signature of the Board Secretary has been provided. The bottom section details the conditions of use and space for the employees signature. Ticket issued to "L. J. Denmead", "Inspector" and signed by "R.A. Spencer"? as Board Secretary and signed by "Leslie Denmead". All entries made in black ink. These passes would have been issued as part of the conditions of employment. Colour photograph of TMSV tour photo for the 60th anniversary of electric trams in Ballarat in August 1965. Photo of Ballarat No. 18 photographed alongside MMTB AEC Regal Mk III bus, No. 543 (42 seats) (Reg. No. HJG 543). No. 18 has a specially painted board over the front of the tram "60th Anniversary / Electric Trams / 1905 Ballarat 1965". Standing between the tram and Bus are Les Denmead, D. Irvine, J. Dowd and T. Young. Both vehicles showing "Special" and standing on Ballarat depot fan. Photo also appears in "MMTB News", Oct - Nov. 1965, Reg. Item 2719.7. Dave Macartney advised 19/11/01 that other the other official guests at the event was Mr. F. K. White, Manager Ballarat SEC. Also attending was W.J. K. Dunstan. Tram photographed side on, has not been fitted with windscreens. has a "Silver Star Starch" roof advertisement and has "Bendigo Tramways" painted onto the side of the tramcar. Yields information about the Ballarat's bogie trams, in particular No. 38 that was decorated for the Royal visit in 1954.Black and white Kodak postcard of Ballarat tram No. 38 decorated for the Royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ballarat, during 1954, on the depot access lead in Wendouree Parade. Decorated with Red, White and Blue cloth on front and sides of cars and over windows and other Royal motifs. On rear of postcard are the words "Post Card / Carte Postal" and "Kodak" in small typeface on the bottom of the central line. Place for stamp as well. Card printed with rounded corners. See also Reg. Functional Object - Whistle, J. Hudson and Co. (Whistles) Ltd, c1940?
Metal pea whistle, steel, nickel plated with a spring steel ring. Whistle component made from two stamped and folded pieces of steel plate with a "pea" inside. Spring steel ring held to the whistle with a pressed steel piece. Whole whistle appears to be silver soldered. On the top of the whistle, stamped into the flat plate is the words "The Acme Thunderer" and on the bottom "Made in England". Known by manufacturer as "Small whistle with tapered mouthpiece, produces high pitch". Made by J. Hudson and Co. (Whistles) Ltd. of Birmingham United Kingdom. Functional Object - Ticket punch
Demonstrates aspects of tramway operation, cancelling or showing that tickets had been inspected following sales to passengers by the conductor or motorman. Traditionally used by tramway operators to check or cancel tickets. Possibly has a strong association with Les Denmead - could have personally been used by Les, or collected at the time of closure.Brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Punch of the type that placed a circular hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring. Functional Object - Cap Badge, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, "Conductor", 1905?
1937 - Cap Badge for a "Conductor". Manufactured by Stokes and Sons, Melbourne. Made from a cast brass item, to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Same manufacturers logo as in Reg Item 1940. Part of the ESCo company and possibly early SEC uniform. ESCo employee number on a special lapel bade - see Reg. item 1952. Not used by the SEC from 1940 - employee number on the cap but early SEC uniforms show them on the collar of the jacket - not known if this uniform adopted. See Reg. Cap Badge for the "Chief Inspector". Made from cast brass to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Set of 27 Stamped enamelled round brass pieces with a hole stamped at the top and ring placed through. Used as a SEC tramways employees pass for either all Provincial tramways, Ballarat or Bendigo only. All badges have the SEC logo in the centre, organisational name (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) in white enamel and outer ring the words "Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways", or "Electric Tramways Ballarat" or "Electric Tramways Bendigo". This is in blue enamel. On the rear are stamped numbers and manufacturers name - "AMOR" or "AMOR MELB" or "STOKES & SONS MELBOURNE" in the bottom portion of the pass. Items .1 -> .10, .12, .13 individually tagged. Functional object - Fare Token/s, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1920s
Demonstrates aspects of the Melbourne Tramways fare system as a comparison to their use at Ballarat.Fare tokens - 1 1/2d - 22mm diameter - dark brown celluloid - with words "Melbourne & Metropolitan" on circumference and "Tramways Board" in centre of token. On reverse in large font "1 1/2" and a small font "D" at to the right - indicating token had a value of one and a half pence. Both sides have a edge lining border about 1mm from the outer edge. Badge - ATMOEA Union, Wittenbach & Co
Australian Tramway Employees Association (Tramways Union) badge. Badge made on a steel/ silver backing with words "Australian Tramway Employees Association" on outer edge of badge with a royal blue enamel background. In centre of badge has the Australian coat of arms with a railway type spoke wheel above the logo and underneath the coat of arms the words "Federated Australia" in a banner. Has a steel ring through a hole in the top of the badge. On back of badge has stamped into the badge "V1 / 5947", possibly indicating state of Victoria and badge number. On the base of the badge has words "Wittenbach & Co. / STSIL" cast into the badge. See image files for front and back of badge.
