A Report of the Commissioners, presented to Parliament in 1891, noted that: ‘The great Musical Festival, which was inaugurated and maintained during the time the Exhibition was open, was such as had never before been attempted. In that comparatively short period, no less than 263 orchestral, grand choral, and other concerts were given by the Centennial Orchestra and Choir, numbering nearly 800 performers, under the conductorship of Mr. F. H. Cowen. At these concerts the works of the great masters were performed in a manner hitherto unknown in these colonies, and your Commissioners are encouraged to hope that the stimulus given through their agency to the study of Music will prove strong and lasting. They also desire to return their thanks to the ladies and gentlemen composing the Centennial Choir, who devoted much time to the rehearsal and performance of the great choral works given during the Festival, and whose valuable services were rendered gratuitously.'An illuminated certificate inscribed to Miss L. The illuminated certificate lists a number of works performed by the choir, at left, and also pictorial roundels of the exterior of the Exhibition Building and of its grand organ. Attached to the card on which the certificate is also attached is a separate Memorandum from the Music Business Manager to Miss Wilson. From - theladynelson.org.au T The original Lady Nelson was built at Deptford, in England, in 1799, for service to the Transport Office on the River Thames. She was designed with sliding keels (centre boards), a device invented by Captain John Schank of the Royal Navy to allow surveying in rivers and shallow water ways. On completion she was selected for exploration services in the Colony of New South Wales and sailed for Port Jackson on 18 March 1800 under the command of Lieutenant James Grant. A brig of 60 tons, she carried a crew comprising the commander, two mates and twelve seaman. As she left the River Thames sailors on nearby ships ridiculed her because of her size and shape, calling her, as she sailed past, 'His Majesty's Tinderbox'. At Portsmouth on the 9th February 1800 she was fitted with four brass carriage guns, three to four pounders, in addition to the two guns already on board. Because of the heavy load she was carrying she was very low in the water, having only two feet nine inches freeboard amidships. The ship finally left Portsmouth on 17th March 1800 as part of an East Indian Convoy. From 1800 to 1825 the Lady Nelson operated around the Australian Coast and fulfilled a variety of roles including exploration, surveying, forming settlements, shifting goods and people around the colonies and capturing pirates. She played pivotal roles in the European settlement of Hobart, Northern Tasmania, Melbourne, Newcastle, Port Macquarie and Northern Territory. Those onboard charted much of Bass Strait, Port Philip, Newcastle, Port Macquarie and (with the Investigator) the coasts of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. She also has links to other locations around the East Coast such as Trial Bay in NSW and the Mt Gambier area of SA. After 25 years of service while trading on the island of Baba the Lady Nelson was overrun by the islanders, the crew was killed and the ship stripped and later burnt and sunk. Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.Wodonga, High Street West Businesses including T. B. Erlandsen & Son. and the Terminus Hotel. Thorald Erlandsen purchased his premises in the 1950s. The building was previously owned by John Whan. It started out as a general store but was later extended to include a drapers. The building sold in 1966 to Manns. The Terminus Hotel was built in 1873. It was purchased by Annie and George Allen in 1879. In 1888 they added extensions including a billiard room, a dining room and 18 other rooms. After the death of her husband, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the license was transferred to William Carkeek. Carkeeks owned the hotel from 1900 - 1903 and again from 1906 - 1909. It was owned by the Costa family for many years, then taken over by Josephine Adams Bernardo Costa was born in Switzerland in 1829 and left his homeland for Sydney at the age of 27. He ventured south to the gold fields of Beechworth and Yackandandah. He moved to 1891. Bernardo applied for and was granted a wine licence on 24/14/1887 and established his Wine Saloon. After his death in 1915, the Wine Café continued to be operated by his daughters Annie, Angela and Gertrude. They also operated a boarding house behind the café. The business operated under a range of owners for approximately 72 years, closing in about 1963. It was estimated that hundreds of thousands of gallons of wines of all kinds were sold there. Richard Osburne (1825-1895) came to Warrnambool in 1847, a pioneer resident in the new settlement. In 1851, with John Wilkinson, he founded Warrnambool’s first newspaper, the Warrnambool Examiner, and issued it weekly for some months until he left the town for the goldfields. Returning in 1853 he resumed publication of the Examiner and continued it, intermittently in its last few years, until 1880. He was acknowledged in his day as the Father of the Warrnambool Press and was a dominant figure in Warrnambool’s early history. He was associated with the establishment of the Aboriginal Reserves, Fire Brigade, Mechanics’ Institute, Warrnambool Council, National School, Presbyterian Church, Public Wants Committee, Villiers Building Society, Fish Protection Society, Dramatic Club, Cricket Club, Otway Gold Exploration Syndicate and other institutions. In 1882 he went to live in Melbourne, returning to publish his ‘History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, a Queen’s Jubilee publication. Richard Osburne’s book is a seminal work of the 19th century history of Warrnambool and its importance cannot be over-emphasized. The original copies of this book are now hard to get and are very valuable. This facsimile is kept because the facsimiles are also now becoming rare and they are good examples of the way a facsimile is reproduced and the reason for the existence of this particular reprint– the importance and usefulness of Osburne’s history and the need to make it accessible to researchers today.This is a facsimile edition (1980) of Richard Osburne's book on the history of Warrnambool from 1847 to 1886.
