There has been a fair amount of confusion about this object as the paperwork states that a 'greenstone' gavel with a maori head carving and plaque mounted on green nephrite stone' was gifted when in fact the gavel is made of wood with a silver plaque. There has been no suggestion made as to what happened to the greenstone gavel. We can assume that it was lost or stolen and replaced with a plain wooden one that we now hold at ANZCA. From the attached plaque the Gavel was gifted to the Faculty of Anaesthetists by the New Zealand Fellows of the Faculty in 1965. Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913. It was located at the Dana Street State School. As numbers grew a larger building was needed. Plans were drawn and a school built within the grounds of the School of Mines. Students started at this new school in 1921. It was officially opened on 9 September 1921 by Sir Alexander, resident of Creswick, local member for North Ballarat and the Minister for Education. He also opened the School Fair which coincided with the buildings ceremony. This was a fair on a grand scale and lasted two days and nights. Staff and students worked for weeks making articles for sale. A parent's committee led by Mr J Rogerson, a local police detective, had been organizing for months. As part of the ceremony for the opening of the school the Strachan Orchestra was engaged to play. .1 Taxi hire provided transport for the Strachan Orchestra for two visits at a total cost of Five Shillings. This hand written slip shows the date of payment and by whom .2 This item is the receipt N A Strachan sent to Mr Steane, Headmaster of the school, for the payment of Two Pounds, cost for engaging the Orchestra. Aylsham is just over two miles (3 km) from a substantial Roman settlement at Brampton, linked to Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund, south of Norwich, by a Roman road which can still be traced in places - that site was a bustling industrial centre with maritime links to the rest of the empire. Excavations in the 1970s provided evidence of several kilns, showing that this was an industrial centre, pottery and metal items being the main items manufactured. Aylsham is thought to have been founded around 500 AD by an Anglo Saxon thegn called Aegel, Aegel's Ham, meaning "Aegel's settlement". The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Elesham and Ailesham, with a population of about 1,000. Until the 15th century, the linen and worsted industry was important here, as well as in North Walsham and Worstead and Aylsham webb or 'cloth of Aylsham' was supplied to the royal palaces of Edward II and III. John of Gaunt was lord of the manor from 1372 and Aylsham became the principal town of the Duchy of Lancaster. A thatched waterpump was built in 1911 at Carr's Corner in memory of John Soame by his uncle, a wealthy financier. An artesian well 170 feet (52 m) deep, its canopy is thatched in Norfolk reed. As with many of the other market towns in the county, the weaving of local cloth brought prosperity to the town in medieval times. Until the 15th century it was the manufacture of linen which was the more important, and Aylsham linens and Aylsham canvases were nationally known. From the 16th century linen manufacture declined and wool became more important, a situation that continued until the coming of the Industrial Revolution. Two articles that relate to the annual demonstration in 1977. The demonstration was called 'Legacy on Parade' for a number of years. The junior legatees were dressed in costumes, for the production of 'My Fair Lady'. They were Leanne Johnston and Terri Cott in long dressed, and Roseanne Whitehead as Eliza Doolittle and John Fiedler as her father Alfred. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. One of several illustrated envelopes, without letter, sketched by soldier/s during the second world war and sent to Mrs MacDonald of WangarattaVictoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. The Adult Education Association Drama Group originally staged Liliom at the Union Theatre, University of Melbourne on Saturday, 3rd November, 1951, at 8pm and on the 8th November it was re-staged by them as the opening production of the The City of Heidelberg Repertory Company, now known as the Heidelberg Theatre Company Inc. in the Eistedford Hall, Ivanhoe. Girls: L - unknown; R - Barbara Fair. The Queen Carnival was a fundraiser for the Holy Trinity Tennis Club. The Queen Carnival Coronation was held in the Canterbury Memorial Hall on 11 June 1940. Mrs F Eastwood was the trainer and the Honorary Secretary of the tennis club. The donor Mary Holborn married Geoffrey Stroud Clucas in 1946 in Surrey Hills.The photo documents a social fundraising practice common in the early 20th century. Queen carnivals were also popular in New Zealand. In both countries they were particularly common during World War I and in the years after, when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. The first such carnival is believed to have been held in Napier, New Zealand, in 1913. Their subjects were noted down and the remarks column included comments such as "Excellent / Good / Fair ". Subjects included: Gallipoli; The Shrine of Remembrance; The Swiss Alps -with slides; Tattooing the history and social significance of; supporting the army in the 80s; people of India. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken on varied.
