(From Glen Stuart). Photos taken from Centenary Bridge c1947. HMS Glory (inner East). HMS Implacable (outer East). HMS Indefatigable (outer West). Unknown freighter at Inner West. Ships still in wartime grey and used to transport personnel and equipment back to Australia after the war, before returning to England. PMHPS assume that these five photos (3354.01 - .05) were taken on the same day. See Glen Stuart's comment above although this photo has been taken on the pier looking back through the gatehouse towards Centenary Bridge. HMS Glory, Implacable and Indefatigable with attendant destroyers Tuscan and Armada arrived in Port Melbourne on 23 January 1946 and returned to England in 1947. [This series of photos 3354.01 - .05 as well as 3361 and 3362 came to PMHPS from the Moe Historical Society via the St Kilda Historical Society. Notations in pencil on the back along the left had edge indicate they came from "C W Ward photo, 355 High St, Prahran, Melbourne". Each photo bears the date 9-12-1947 in the top left corner. It is not known what this date refers to. Possibly it is when the photo was printed. Another notation on each photo says "Port Melbourne, taken in 1920". Framed, glazed, black and white photograph of the intersection of Flinders and Swanston St Melbourne, looking towards Flinders St railway station. Timber frame, painted brown and gold, with brown paper lining on rear. Has brown string stapled at rear on both sides for hanging. In the central bottom of the rear is "Glen Waverley Picture Framing, sticker, 698 High St Road, Glen Waverley with a 7 digit phone number. Photo c1926?? features a very busy intersection cable trams (No. 17 west bound in Flinders, tram 160 north bound in Swanston, two W class trams, other cable trams, many motor cars, horse drawn vehicles, cyclist and pedestrians. Note the standing zone in Flinders St. In photo are Young and Jacksons Hotel, Bacchus Marsh Concentrated Milk table cream, and numerous signs on the railway station. Black and white photograph taken from St Pauls Cathedral Melbourne, looking south over Princes Bridge, early 1950's. Has nine trams in the view, mainly W2's, but one W3 and many motor vehicles, trucks etc. Shows the gardens in the now Southbank area, the junction just past the bridge of South Melbourne tram line, Wirth Bros Circus and other buildings, Prince Henry's Hospital. In particular is an Olympic pool direction sign hanging below the Batman Ave tram sign. This would have been the pool in Batman Ave, nearer to Flinders St, within the Flinders St yard complex, not the 1956 pool. Directly below is a female pedestrian dress in the classic 1950's "Dior" look. Over the bridge on the west side is "The Trocadero" formerly The Green Mill Dance Hall opened on 07/09/1926. West of that again is "Olympia" run by Wirth's . In the distance is Prince Henry's Hospital, the tall section was built in 1942, since demolished. Rod Atkins noted that the Olympia burnt down in the early fifties about the same the Trocadia closed, so pre 1953. Note the centre pole is still place at the Sturt Street intersection. In Batman Ave we have two W2's 401 and earlier one. In St Kilda Road we have four W2's in foreground in then W3 - No. 667 then a W4 then a SW6 in the distance. Outbound on route 4D is 578, behind it is 340 on route 5. Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtowwn, looking east. The location is immediately west of the Pleasant St. intersection, soon after Aphrasia St. was extended from Pleasant St. to Pakington St., so that the three sharp curves for trams into Retreat Road, Pleasant St., and then Aphrasia St., were reduced to one, from Pakington into Aphrasia St. May 1914. Note that sleepers are being used in the construction, as seen in items 9271 and 9214, with tie bars and continuous concrete about 50cm wide under each rail. The overhead is being worked on in two ways; safely with the horse drawn tower wagon, or less so by ladder.,Black and white print on paper.GRS710/.25/1/7 and 25-7 written on the reverse in pencil. Postcard looking east along tree lined Collins St from Elizabeth Street with many now demolished buildings in the view. Buildings at the time include Block Court, Victour, Kodak, Souther Cross, Howey Court. Trams in the view are W2 224, W2 253 (Spencer Street Route 11) and three other W2 class trams. Pictured is the Lazarus Crushing Plant and boiler house, Lansell's '222'. Amd the new Chum Mines in the background. On the inside at the top is the New Chum Railway, Golden Square. Pictured is the mine and its buildings, two chimneys, two large wood stacks and other mines in the background. On the left, a man is standing on the side of the railway line beside the mine. The next picture is the United Hustlers and Redan Mine, west of Comet Hill State School, Sandhurst Road. It shows the mine and its buildings, chimney, ore bins, mullock heap and tramway. The middle picture is the Central Deborah, Violet Street, near Bendigo Creek, Golden Square. It shows the poppet legs, buildings and some machinery behind the large building. The large building has eight ventilators in the roof. The buildings are made of corrugated iron. The bottom left picture is the Deborah Mine, Quarry Hill. The picture shows the poppet legs on the hilltop, the buildings beside it, a square chimney behind the poppet legs and some vegetation and a peppercorn tree in the foreground. The far building also has ventilators in the roof. The picture on the right is underground at 1000 feet level in the Deborah Mine. Pictured are three men with a rock drill. On the back, at the top is a picture of a First Motion Winding Engine at Deborah - later at Central Deborah. The picture shows the engine and driver. The middle picture is the South New Moon Mine, Eaglehawk - leading mine in State in 1903. The picture shows the poppet legs, buildings, chimney and a high tramway. In the foreground is a dam. This well indexed booklet was produced by the Warrnambool Standard with the assistance of the City of Warrnambool. It contains lists of local government council and councillors for the surrounding south western district. There are photographs of the Warrnambool City Council members and main officers. Information provided covers services for accommodation, animal welfare, Churches, community organisations, complaints, counselling, courts, education, employment, health, legal, material aid, public safety, recreation, recycling, community support, tourism and transport. The booklet contains advertisements for some local businesses. This service directory provides a snapshot of businesses and support services available in Warrnambool and the South Western District in 1991. It will be useful for researchers looking at this area in the late 20th century. The booklet also provides an insight into how community awareness of recycling improving our environment was undertaken in 1991.A 32 page booklet of yellow newsprint with black printing. Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtown, looking east. Relaying stringer constructed track in Mercer St., just west of the Gheringhap St. intersection opposite Johnstone Park, looking east towards Malop Street. The southern track has subsided and the original concrete stringers dug out, with them lying beside the track. According to the local papers, wider stringers are to be used.
