Painting: Walter MAGILTON, Walter Magilton, Sunlight and Shadows, Warrandyte, 2011
Walter Magilton's professional painting career is highlighted by numerous solo exhibitions, five of which have been in Great Britain. He has also won countless prizes, which include many 'Best in Show' awards. Walter is represented in a great number of private and corporate national and international collections, including ART Bank, in approximately twelve countries. This painting is a one of a series of approximately eight works of the river at Warrandyte and the local creeks, with particular emphasis on the reflections in the water and of the wattle growing along the banks. I was particularly inspired by Penleigh Boyde who did similar work while living in Warrandyte in the early 1920s.'Sunlight and Shadows, Warrandyte' is an oil on canvas painting depicting the Warrandyte landscape, featuring a winding creek with beautiful reflections cast upon it. The colour palate comprises muted green and earth tones, with a vivid aqua for reflective water.walter magilton, nillumbik, warrandyte -

Painting, Herbert J Woodhouse, River Yarra Near Dights Falls, c.1892
Herbert James Woodhouse (1854-1937) was born in Essex and arrived in Australia with his family in 1857. A painter-lithographer like his father and three of his brothers, he was a prizewinner in the South Australian Society of Arts exhibition of 1885. He also received commendations in exhibitions at the Victorian Academy of Arts and the New South Wales Arts Society. At an exhibition of his paintings at Scott’s Hotel in Collins Street in 1892, the reviewer for Table Talk noted that the ‘artist paints almost solely in the open air, and his studies are generally carried out during the trips of the Victorian Sketching Club’. One of the paintings singled out for praise was: ‘A very effective river scene at Willsmere, aptly named A Midstream Mirror, ... a picture powerful in its effective reflection of sunlight in the river.’ Herbert Woodhouse died in Geelong in June 1937, aged 82, and was buried in the Eastern Cemetery. A number of his sketchbooks are held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria.Framed oil painting on board of the River Yarra at Studley Park, Kew, by Herbert James Woodhouse (1858-1937). Functional object - car lantern, Joseph Lucas Ltd. Birmingham, England, Lucas King of the Road Lantern, c.1930
This lantern or lamp was used for lighting an automobile or motor cycle in the 1920s or 1930s. It could also have been used in a household or carried by a person. It was made by the English firm of Joseph Lucas Ltd., a business founded in 1860 which originally made scoops, buckets and plant holders. In 1875 it began the production of lamps and in the early 20th century made automotive components. Today after having merged with a North American company it makes components for the automotive and aerospace industries. The term 'King of the Road' was reserved for products that were regarded as the most prestigious and the ones commanding the highest price. This lamp was advertised as one that 'will not blow out in the toughest gale'.This item is retained as an interesting example of the lighting used for cars and bicycles early in the 20th century. This is a metal lantern which is much rusted but which may have been chrome or nickel plated. It has a lighting mechanism enclosed in glass, a handle on the top, a winding screw on the side, an oil container and a metal plaque on the base. LUCAS No. 636 KING of the ROAD JOS.LUCAS LTD. Functional object - Kerosene Lamp
This Kerosene lamp was made in a similar design to marine lamps of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Kerosene lamps were one of the most common oil lamps used and manufactured until the 1980s. The lamp is an example of 19th and early 20th-century kerosene lamps used on board ships. The design was still made in the 1980s. Kerosene lamp; metal framed cylindrical lamp with a hinged top lid with a chain-locking device. A swinging metal handle on top pivots on two side lugs and a loop in its centre. Another similar handle is on the base. Four thin rods join the base to the top.
