Historical information of soldiers from the Albury-Wodonga district who fought in the Boer War in South Africa 1899 - 1902. In 1996 the then curator for the 8/13 VMR Museum, the Hon Colonel John Neale, commissioned the author to research a group of returned servicemen and women from the Boer War and had lived within 100 km radius of the Albury/Wodonga townships.The Boer War was the second war in South Africa and was the result of heavy taxes and non voting rights of the local white Boer population. Colonial forces including the Australian Light Horse contingent where called upon by England to overthrow the rebellion. This War was the first engagement of Australian troops fighting on foreign soil.This Honour Roll details the pay rates, the battle highlights, weapons used and maps covering the first Australian contingent of soldiers who fought in the Transvaal (Boer War).. Listed are the names of those soldiers who lived within 100klms of Albury and Wodonga.The soldiers are listed by Location, Rank, Initial,Name and Unit. The significance of both the War and those who served in it is two fold. Firstly it demonstrates that the tie between the Colonial outreaches of England's Empire to "the Motherland" were extremely strong at this point in time. This union remained strong up until the middle of World War II when England could not help Australia to defend itself against possible invasion by Japan. The alliance between Australia and the United States of America replaced the British/Australian pact. Secondly the attitude of, and the high degree of horsemanship of those from the Albury and Wodonga area. The degree of adaptability, by these servicemen, to suit the environment in which they fought provided the first real insight into the Australian psyche "of those living and surviving on the harsh Australian outback"This book has a bright red soft cover and is bound with bright yellow tape. This item predates the change of Imperial measure (England -1824) to decimal measure (Europe) in Australia (1970 to 1988). This item was manufactured in England as, was the majority of measuring tool and equipment. It was not until the late 1950s that other countries e.g. United States and Europe provided the same type of manufactured tools for the Australian market. World War II, when Australia had to defend its own boarders that the political push for self sufficiency of manufactured goods started local production. Workers in the Kiewa Valley had always relied on the high quality of tools and manufactured goods coming from England. From the middle to late 1950s migration by skilled workers from a war torn Europe provided the source of manpower for the expansion of the manufacturing industries in Australia.The requirement of an accurate measuring tool has always been critical. This item was used at the time when Australia was using the British Imperial measurements. Accurate measurements by carpenters and other trades people for both town and rural needs was just as critical as for the larger cities. The transition period from Imperial to metric was a period of over four years but it still presented those who had used the Imperial measurements for a longer period in their trades with a dual system of measurement for a longer time(usually up to their retirement) Other nations still using Imperial measurements kept the transition from Imperial to metric alive (the UK and USA still uses Imperial measurements in 2012)Retractable metallic wired tape measure within a leather casing. These drawings have been produced in 1919 by Ron Uebergang when he was a pupil at the Warrnambool Technical School. The Uebergang families were pioneers in the Warrnambool/Allansford area. Ronald Uebergang (1903-1971) was born in Warrnambool to Ernest Uebergang and Mary Watson. He went to Allansford State School and Warrnambool Technical School and married Myra Hall. He was mechanically-minded, a good photographer and fond of music and dancing. He and Myra had a dairy farm at the family property, Hopkins Hill near Allansford and later took up grazing beef cattle. Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913, and was located first on a Timor Street site and later moved to Caramut Road. Today it is called Brauer College. These drawings are of considerable interest because they were produced by Ron Uebergang and the Uebergang families have been prominent in the history of the Warrnambool and Allansford areas since the 1850s. They are also of interest as examples of the type of work produced by students of Warrnambool Technical School in its early days. .1 A Blueprint for a Feed Pump for a Horizontal Engine - blue background, white drawings. This drawing was produced by Ron Uebergang in 1919 at the Warrnambool Technical School. Members of the Uebergang families have been in the Warrnambool/Allansford area since the early 1850s. The card has the signature of Ron Uebergang. Attached by a metal clip to the card are four pages of measurements and plans of the steam cylinder. These are in black and red ink. This booklet commemorates the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Shire of Warrnambool. The original proclamation was read from the Government gazette 13/12/1863 Pg 2958. This follows from being proclaimed a roads district in 1854 which was then partly portioned and proclaimed the Municipal district in 1855. Portion of the shire was again annexed to the city in 1955. The Warrnambool shire covers the area on north east and western sides of the city of Warrnambool covering approximately 600 square miles and has a rich history of farming and dairy products. A program which commemorates 100 years of the shire of Warrnambool. This program contains a menu and order of events for the evening on Saturday 6th February 1960.. It was held by the United Service Institution of Victoria, Warrnambool Branch which was a group associated with naval, military and Air Force background. When the organisation was established in 1891 their membership was officers of the three disciplines and their main objective was the higher professional education of officers and to maintain forces in a state of efficiency. To this end they attempted to establish reading rooms , museums and lecture rooms. This card has come to the society from W R Angus who was a local doctor in Warrnambool for many years.Significant for its list of local signatures and their link with a state organisation.Cream card with black text with logo in centre front of the page. This framed photo usually hangs on the wall of the meeting room at the Invermay Hall, on the Invermay Reserve. The photograph features Invermay Cricket Club member Tom Reidy who donated his Cricket Club jacket to the Invermay Local History Assn. This jacket is now held in the ILHA Collection.The photograph is of historical and cultural significance. This is the only known copy of the photograph. Chief Secretary of Victoria, 17 August 1971" on the exterior bluestone wall. The Eltham Branch of the Heidelberg Regional Library Service was opened on 17 August 1971 by Victoria’s Chief Secretary R. J. Hamer. The library was designed by the firm Leith and Bartlett and was the southern wing of the Shire of Eltham Offices in Main Road Eltham. Visitors entered a “book plaza” which embodies the display techniques of a bookshop. Through this area was located a quieter area for reference and the more “purposeful” reader. The library was opened as part of the Shire of Eltham’s centenary celebrations. The library and Shire Offices were demolished exactly 25 years later in 1996. The current library was opened in 1994. Collage of a collection of black and white portraits of men in oval frames with names. They are past councillors and the late Officer C.S. Wingrove of the Shire of Eltham from its inception until 1914. Originally compiled as a farewell gift to Ewan H. Cameron on his retirement from Parliament and community affairs in 1914. The photos were encased in a very large and handsme frame. It was presented to Mr. Cameron as a "testimonial [and] a small token of [Eltham Shire Councillors and community] their heartfelt esteem, and felt Mr Cameron would often look upon the faces encased in the frame, and it would remind him of friendships made and good work performed.' Mr Cameron was a well-respected man described as “Father of all in the County of Evelyn”. There were many living monuments of the good work done by Mr Cameron – schools, churches, halls and railways. Mr Cameron’s retirement was partly due to deafness. On the occasion of the presentation he told his audience that he started his public career in 1858 when he was elected a member of the Castlemaine Mining Board-; he held the position till 1900-42 years. In 1862 he was elected to the Eltham Shire Council (then a Road Board), and retired in 1914-52 years. He entered Parliament in 1874 and retired in 1914 -40 years and 8 months. The Hon Ewan H. One of the originals of this photograph was destroyed in the fire which burnt the Shire Offices at Kangaroo Ground in February 1934.This unique photo documents early pioneers in the Shire of Eltham. The context of its origins further illustrates the esteem of which E.H. Cameron was held in the community. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
