William Tulloch Oat TURNBULL was the son of John TURNBULL who was a prominent citizen of Sandridge/Port Melbourne. John owned property around Rouse and Nott Streets and served on Council for 15 years and as Mayor 1877-78. William married Barbara Annie GOULD at Ross Street, Port Melbourne on 9 Oct 1884. They had one daughter, Margaret Keith and a son Sydney. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited Australia. The Port Melbourne Council established a Strong Post in St Kilda Road to welcome the royal couple. Standing third and fourth from left Mrs CRICHTON, holding an Australian flag, and Cr J P CRICHTON. The tall man in centre of photograph looking at the camera is S S ANDERSON, Town Clerk. Second from right is Cr William HOWE, Mayor. This is a proof version of the final photo also held in the PMHPS collection (293.02) where the oval inset of the royal couple has been swapped from the right hand upper corner in the proof to the upper left corner in final version. RMS Oceana postcard produced by Vienna Studio, 68 Beach Street, Port Melbourne. The Vienna Studio was run by Austrian-born Kallman FEITEL, first in Richmond around 1902 then in Port Melbourne from around 1904. The Oceana was built 1887-88 for P&O at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland and sailed on her maiden voyage from London for Melbourne and Sydney on 19 March 1888. The Oceana collided with the Pisagua when leaving the Port of Tilbury, England and sank on 15 March 1912. Gercovich family with 12 children photographed in a studio around ...Vincent Gercovich married Winifred Rebecca Bennett (English emigrant) on 13 February 1867 in St. Alipius church in Ballarat. They had a total of 12 children. Little is known about his life, but what is known that he was well disposed to several languages and due to his ability to communicate with immigrants worked at the entry gate to the city of Ballarat. He died at the age of 61. Vincent was one of these early Croatian immigrants who came to Victoria around 1850s. His surname Gercovich (probably Gerković or Jerković) came from the island of Hvar on Dalmatian coast. On his Australian citizenship documents, the place of birth was stated as Dalmatia, Austria. From research of collected documents it can be concluded that the first Croats arrived to this country some 150 years ago mainly because of gold discovery. Victoria had a few rich deposits of gold and for obvious reasons many came to join the great ‘Gold Rush’.A black and white family photograph features Gercovich family with 12 children photographed in a studio around 1889. Studio portrait of young lady in graduation gown in a wooden frame. Frame is made of wood and is of an irregular shape with decorative carvings surrounding the portrait. Decorative carvings were possibly painted gilt which has since largely worn away. Portrait is covered in glass. Portrait is of a young lady wearing a white dress with a graduation gown over it. She has a mortarboard with a tassel on her head with a large bow at the back and she is holding a scroll in her right hand. She has a locket around her neck and a brooch suspending a cross at her neck. Bracelets are on both wrists. The words Bartlett Bros Bendigo are printed on the bottom of the matte surrounding the photograph.
