Document - Document - Correspondence, VIOSH: Comments on Post Graduate Course in OHM; Max Brooke to Derek Viner, 1978
Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Max Brooke, a member of the Internal Working Party - Occupational Hazard Management - wrote to Derek Viner outlining his concerns re "Integration of the Management Sections in the PGI course in Occupational Hazard Management". His concerns were presented at further meetings of the Working Party. These discussions were held to fine tune the courses to be offered when the First Intake was due in 1979 Members of the Working Party were Max Brooke, G Fernandez, J Harvey, B Rollins, Derek VinerFour foolscap pages, one smaller page - all typedNotations in pencil and inkviosh, victorian institute of occupational safety and health, occupational hazard management, internal working party, derek viner, max brooke, g fernandez, j harvey, b rollins -

Book, F.W. Chesire Ltd, This is the Grass by Alan Marshall, 1962
This is the Grass is Alan Marshall's sequel to his auto biography I Can Jump Puddles. First published in 1962, it tells the story of Marshall's adolescence, as he searches for work amid the rough and tumble of 1920s Melbourne. From Wallaby Creek in Donvale Shire where he boards with hard-drinking bushmen, to the slums of East Melbourne, his recollections bring to life a cast of colourful characters, each with his private tragedy. His narrative, encompassing the lived experience of ordinary men and women, is infused with Marshall's deep sense of humanity. Like its famous prequel, This is the Grass is a novel of immense courage, conveying rich insights into little-known aspects of Australia's past.Burgundy hardbackPencil: 1st Edition alan marshall -

Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, The Round Table: On Being Australian in 1959, 1959
Boyd comments on Australian life and culture in the first half of the twentieth century up until 1959. He reflects on changes - is it progress? - from the pastoral to the industrial, briefly on housing and construction, and emphasises US influences in design (especially cars) and politics, and the lingering, conservative influence of the UK. Robin Boyd wrote this article anonymously. He was a member of the 'Round Table', a English based group on imperial and commonwealth matters.Original manuscript of an article published in The Round Table, "The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs", Vol 50, Issue 159, pp 26-31, 1959.Typewritten, quarto, 6 pagesAnnotations and corrections in pencilaustralian identity, taste, automobile design, they're a weird mob, nino culotta, 1959 australia, cyril pearl, on the beach, so you want to be an australian, sidney nolan, john ely burchard, robin boyd, manuscript -

Photograph, Dr James Blakie, his wife Catherine and son Ray, c1912
The donor identified this as having been taken in the orchard area of 'Edgeware', the property on the corner of Montrose Street and Union Road in Surrey Hills where the Blakie family lived and from which Dr Blakie practiced. The gate opened to Union Road and the orchard was the area later developed as the shops at 157-165 Union Road. The property was rented from the Zeplin family. This would have been taken shortly before Dr Blakie moved across the road to 174 Union Road - the Surrey Hills Medical Centre. He purchased the land and has architect Arthur Plaisted design a home and surgery for him. Family details: James Blakie was born in New Zealand to a farming family of Scottish origin. He trained at Otago University with additional study at Cambridge. He married Catherine Miller Martin in 1906. They had 4 children: Geoffrey Noel (1906-1955); Raymond James (1907-1989); Theodore (1913-1913) and a daughter.Black and white photo of Dr James Blakie standing with Mrs Blakie, seated, and young son Ray standing beside his mother in an area with rough grass.
