Five copies of typed notes on Bendigo Post Offices. The first Post Office opened on the 1/7/1852. Also mentions descriptions of Post Offices, the postal rates to send a letter/parcel. There are also some facts, the number of bells, size of the clock face, hands and numerals. Initially listed as T J Connelly's Tin shop, this premises on the corner of High and Forest Street, expanded to include all items of ironmongery. By 1878 they were advertising gas stoves for sale and installation.The item is alphabetical customer list of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each handwritten page lists the customer name and order number. Note: corresponding orders are not in this book. The book does not have a date reference in it. The book has a flexible cardboard cover and the pages are bound together with string. This item is part of the Margaret Roberts Collection.There is a black mark at the bottom right-hand side of the front cover. There are some grey lead notes on the inside front cover. Inscription on plaque: "This Chapel was dedicated on Wednesday 1st August 1934 by Most Reverend Bishop McCarthy DD, Bishop of Sandhurst (Bendigo) for the House of Studies, Novitiate and Retreat Centre of the Society of Jesus (1934-1974) and after sale to the State Government was deconsecrated. It was returned to the catholic community in 2002." Part of a collection of photographs of Loyola College, Grimshaw Street Watsonia, established 1980 on the site of the Loyola Seminary. The College purchased the original building in 2002. The Club known today as the Bendigo Bowls Club originated from the Sandhurst Bowling Club in 1870/71 changing its name to Bendigo in 1872. It is located in central Bendigo just a short walk through the picturesque Rosalind Park from Bendigo’s central business district. https://bendigobowlsclub.com.au/history/ William Henry Sunderland was a Bendigo investor, member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange and director of many mining companies. His father, George, had been a mounted trooper assigned as a gold escort between Melbourne and Bendigo. William became the President of the Bendigo Bowling Club in 1916.Leather satchel with gold embossed text. Text reads B.B.C Holmes Trophy. Won by W. H. Sunderland. 1906-7. Inside the satchel are eight items pertaining to a men's toiletry set. These include; a comb, a mirror, a clothing brush, a glass cylinder with metal lid, a small metal tin, a razor strop, a shoe hook and a soap case. Four items appear to be missing from the set. Joseph Henry Abbott arrived in Australia from Birmingham England in 1852 aged 22 hoping to make his fortune on the goldfields. In 1853 he opened a store in Bendigo, Abbott and Co and from there began a lengthy career as a business man supplying the local community with goods and services including owning and operating the New Times Boot Market & Factory in Pall Mall, Sandhurst, run by his wife, Anne (nee Deague). J H Abbott’s main ambitions were to serve on the local and state councils. He was elected Chairman of the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1860, Mayor of the City of Bendigo in 1891 and was gazetted a Justice of the Peace in 1864. Over his lifetime J H Abbott was closely linked to nearly all the leading institutions in Bendigo and worked for the benefit of local charities. He was trustee of the Bendigo Art Gallery and a Freemason and was said to be the first person in Bendigo to have a telephone installed in1882 between his residence and his business in Pall Mall. After JH Abbott died in 1904 he passed on his businesses to his son JH Abbott Jnr and adopted son RHS Abbott. These businesses continued to trade under the name JH Abbott & Co and today still operates under the name Abbott Supply although the last of the family interests ceased in 1986. Abbott and Co acted as agents for larger Melbourne based suppliers such as Briscoe & Co and the Australian Explosives & Chemical Co.
