In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. This red brick building in Balcombe Road, Black Rock, was constructed in the inter-war period (1939) as a holiday home for State wards and neglected children who were placed in the care of the Sisters of Mercy.Annette Meikle, St Vincent de Paul's Children's Home 1977, ink and watercolour, 35.7 x 25.6 cm. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. ‘Hollyburton’ was built in 1908 by the Honourable JV Fairbairn MHR and is notable for its Australian-style arts and crafts detailing. Paul GREENWAY (1955 - ) Born Wagga Wagga, New South Wales Paul Greenway was a visiting lecturer at Gippsland Centre of Art and Design (GCAD) c 1977 This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. They bought works from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught there.Handbuilt porcelain with multi-fired low tempreture lustres and enamels. List depicts a wide variety of prospective guest speakers that spoke at Tuesday luncheons between 1977 and 1981. Their subjects were noted down and the remarks column included comments such as "Excellent / Good / Fair ". Subjects included: Gallipoli; The Shrine of Remembrance; The Swiss Alps -with slides; Tattooing the history and social significance of; supporting the army in the 80s; people of India. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken on varied. This badge has been issued by the Victorian branch of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of OddFellows. This is a benefit society owned by members who assist other members in times of illness or unemployment. Originally founded in Manchester, England, the M.U.I.O.O.F. started in Melbourne in 1840. The Warrnambool branch was founded in 1860. This badge has no known local provenance but Warrnambool members of the M.U.I.O.O.F. would probably have worn such a badge in the past so it is kept as a memento of those times.Gold metal badge in a shield shape with royal blue enamel with text as a banner across the top and again at the bottom .
