Believed to be addressed to her cousin, Mary Ann Shillinglaw, from May ? - This could be Ethel May Bottle b. 1883, daughter of Edward Henry Bottle and step-daughter of Catherine Shillinglaw but this type of post-card photo only commenced in 1905 when she would have been 22. The girl looks more like 15. It is not known if Elizabeth Docherty (nee Shillinglaw) had any children. Born 1861 and married 1894 at 33 years of age, it is possible that she could have had a daughter who would have been 15 in 1910. "Dear Mary I hope this will find you all well. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection.This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. St Aidan's Orphanage, Bendigo. Black and white photograph (11.5cm x 7cm) of the construction of a building at the orphanage with three statues and rose plantings in the foreground. The words 'Bendigo Orphanage’ is written in pencil on the reverse. A small stamp, possibly with the words - by Harringtons - is over stamped with the number 3 53. This photo was probably taken in 1930-1 during the construction of the second orphanage building, two storeys and to the east of the 1905 building. This photo is a very early example of an action image from an Australian Rules football match in a rural area in Victoria. The identity of the two teams is not confirmed. The team with the dark colored uniform is probably the Bacchus Marsh football team. The other team is possibly Parwan. The style of uniforms suggest the date of the photo is from around 1910 or possibly a few years earlier. This item has particular historic and social significance as an action image of two of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. These type of images are very rare for teams outside of the major metropolitan competitions such as the Victorian Football League of Victorian Football Association. It therefore provides a rare and fascinating depiction of an early football game as it was played and the ground conditions in which footballers played in the early 1900s.A black and white photograph produced from a digitized glass negative held by the State Library of Victoria titled, ‘Men and boys playing football on an oval set among trees and fields’ ca. 1910, Pictures Collection, State Library Victoria, H92.433/20. A significant identifier for this image is the presence of the Evans Pavilion in the background which was built in 1896. Ties split into two parts at halfway point Each tie is tied at the end with a thin cord and finished with two tassels with cord covered beads. Garment, including long sleeves, is fully lined with cream coloured satin with decorative stitching pattern.Rounded neckline at back with stand up collar (5cm) decorated with lace. Lace fabric panel across shoulders at front and back. Both sides of front opening have a border (7cm) from shoulder to hem. Neckline dips to V shape above waist. Panels decorated with piping. Front panels lined with cream coloured embroidered lace netting to top button. A different patterned lace lines the top part of the opening panels and extends across the neckline at the back.Two hanging loops attached inside shoulders at top of sleeves. Long sleeves of cream coloured lace fabric with double layer of satin lining. The original glass negative is part of a set donated to the Society by Ian McKenzie, a professional photographer in Kew. Patmore & Dinham, Scottsdale, ca. 1910 - ca. 1920. A large corrugated iron store owned by ‘Patmore & Dinham: Produce, Manure and General Merchants’. The store was located in Scottsdale, northeast Tasmania. For more than forty years, George Melville Dinham had occupied a prominent position in the Scottsdale community.
