'Lost Glories: a memorial to forgotten Australian buildings' was published by David Latta in 1986. It tells the story of a number of significant Australian buildings that had previously been demolished. A chapter in the book was devoted to Goathland, later known as Tara Hall. To supplement the text, he sourced photographs from a range of suppliers, chiefly the Royal Women's Hospital which had once owned Tara Hall, but had sold it in 1960. This is one of the photographs donated to KHS by the author. The Grand Staircase of Tara Hall, circa 1957. The central hallway and stairs of Tara Hall, (previously named Byram, Goathland and Lowan). Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, designed this Studley Park Road mansion, of which the hallway was a significant feature, for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888. Tara Hall, one of the great houses in Kew was demolished in 1959-60. Possibly Marc Strizic, photographer (1928-2012). Newspaper clippings and a photo of Stan Savige's funeral from a file about the life of Stan Savige. The file contained documents pertaining to the creation of the book 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell (catalogued separately) as well as these newspaper clippings and photo of Sir Stanley Savige's funeral. The newspaper features refer to the portrait by E Buckmaster submitted to the Archibald Prize competition (00634.4 and 00634.5, page 7 missing) as well as to the book (00634.6). Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. Fred Dwerryhouse swimming pool in Ringwood built 1970s was a popular and well used venue until it was demolished in 2013 to make way for a new pool. The shop was at 84 High Street, St Kilda, Victoria. The back of the premises was destroyed by fire on 30 June 1959. It was demolished by order of St Kilda City Council. Two newspaper articles, re the fight to save tree near Ringwood Timber on Maroondah Highway, late 1950s. The Yellow Box tree was located west of Ringwood timber, outside Bill Patterson's Motors near the New Street intersection. The fight was led by Cr Ben Hubbard, the secretary of the Ringwood Horticultural Society, Mr Kearsley, but was eventually lost. The articles are from The Herald and dated December 1957 and 11th June 1959.
