The then owner, Julia Harris, reopened the lolly shop in an old shipping container until the premises was rebuilt. Bookplate, ‘Ex Libris John Gartner’
John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. Series of three Colour photograph of Ballarat No. 37 using the Dawson St. crossover in Sturt St. Photos on Agfa Paper and taken on Friday 21 August 1971. Tram has the destination of Lydiard St. North and two roof advertisements for the SEC "Everything's under control in my all electric kitchen" on either side of the tram. 2427.1 - Photo of tram about to use the crossover with St. Patricks Cathedral in the background. 2427.2 - as above, but with tram on crossover. Bottom right hand corner appears to have a sleeve from someone else in the photograph. 2427.3 - after tram has completed the use of the crossover and continuing along Sturt St. to the City terminus. Photo has end of film marks on the right hand edge. Note H.P. The third Michael Taffe to live at Hymettus cottage Ballarat was dux of his class at the local parish school, St Patrick's Drummond St in 1958 and 1959. These mass produced premium plates were a popular insertion for such awards from their inception in Europe in the eighteenth century until the late twentieth century. Tram has dash canopy lights, but no large white strip under the drivers windows. Tram has a good load of passengers on it, with all blinds drawn, showing destination "Golden Square". Fitted with roof ads "Electricity best for Cooking" and an ad Mamouneys - Furniture and Carpets. A Cohn's drinks ad is on the front dash panel. Photo has the Ezywalkin store in background and the City Club Hotel in the right hand side of the photo. A brochure explaining Legacy's work and the facilities they provide. It is aimed at the widows to inform them of what is available to them and it outlines the times for classes for the children. The earliest copy in 1944 included the charter of Legacy and headings in red printing. 'Melbourne Legacy offers friendship and help to the dependants of our departed comrades.' Headings included: Help and advice to mothers or guardians; Mothers' Club; Senior Widows' Club; Housing and repairs; Legal advice; Medical, dental and optical care; Education, Employment, Camps and holidays, Christmas party, Residences, Junior Legacy groups. The notation H26 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Keith Kings, the photographer has extensive notes hand written on the slide - that the tram was scrapped on 17/7/1959 and that it was the first W2 to be scrapped. Probably the last time 313 was photographed.
