A pair of shoes worn by a Presentation nun at Star of the Sea Convent, Gardenvale. The history of the shoes is unknown; nuns working in the convent's archive found them stored among convent records, and subsequently donated them to Brighton Historical Society. The Presentation Sisters, a Catholic order originating from Ireland, founded the Star of the Sea Convent in Gardenvale in 1883. Led by Mother Paul Fay and Mother John Byrne, they established a convent and school in a house called Turret Lodge, on the site of the present Star of the Sea College in Martin Street. The order and the school remain active in Brighton today. Foy & Gibson was one of Australia's earliest department store chains. Baker and his men arrive at the church, the Sgt. approaches Con, declares that no police action will be taken before the town re-opens, and asks if he can provide an escort for the cortege. The funeral over O'Day tarries till after the shops have opened and Sgt. Baker sets a trap for him on the bridge over the Murray. Cornering him on the bridge he says it will give him great pleasure to personally escort him all the way to the police station. "All the way Sergeant?" asks O'Day. "Then come on!" What was distinct about the Performing Arts Course at the University of Ballarat is it had students from a wide range of back grounds with an age range from 17 to 53 years. Students are keen to not only act but to write, design, direct, production manage, stage manage, design lighting and sound and create their own theatre. They also take responsibility for a large percentage of the decision making and administration. Artistic Director and Course Co-ordinator was Peter Tulloch. Third Year Exhibition was "Sanctus" written by Chris Dickins. Director was Peter Tulloch. Names of all those involved in the production and publicity are listed. The centre spread shows the 15 scenes and those appearing in each. A student could be involved in both production and performing. Sponsorship provided by a number of local businesses and people. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. Juli HAAS (26 April 1952- 02 March 2014) Born Melbourne Juli HAAS (1952-2013) Born Melbourne Juli Haas mainly produced watercolours, artist’s books and limited edition prints using the printmaking technique of Drypoint. She often explores the lives of everyday people with her work often portraying the darker side of human nature in an interior world filled with fantasy and absurdity. Themes throughout her work incorporate the use of childhood memory, place and a sense of personal history. Inspiration is derived from observing her own environment, which is then developed into a portrayal of the absurdity and drama of everyday human situations. Haas applies layers of intense and vibrant colour, which also serves to reinforce the narrative element that runs through the work. The psychological drama that informs this narrative exposes the darker side of life, expressing elements of anger, violence and isolation. Juli Haas obtained the following qualifications: * 1994-95 Master of Arts (Research). A photo of a troop ship in 1917. This could be the ship Private John Basil McLean travelled to Europe on, and the signatures were his shipmates and the photo was kept as a souvenir of the voyage. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 on the transport "Medic" for Plymouth, UK, arriving on 18 February 1917. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920. Yarra Valley Anglican School principal Margaret Peters died last Sunday. She was appointed principal of Yarra Valley in 1994. Meanwhile, the principal at Tinternvale Primary School, Gary Hooper died of cancer on October 11. He was 54. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit. "When Miss Karen Brady, typist of Westgarth St, Northcote, was knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Heidelberg Road and Fenwick St, Clifton Hill, about midnight on Saturday (3 January 1942), her skull was fractured, and she died in St Vincent's Hospital 4 hours later. She was aged between 45 and 50. Miss Brady was for many years an enthusiastic worker for the Harbour Lights Guild for the Missions to Seamen. She worked there at the canteen many nights during the week, and assisted in many other ways at the mission. Mission officials said yesterday that Miss Brady had been a "splendid worker for the mission". This prospectus contains the history of Leahy's electrical . The objectives of this company were to allow expansion of the present business ( est,1946) , to take advantage of the excellent corner site and to modernise the building and carry all heavy duty electrical and mechanical lines for commercial users and farmers.Attached was a hire car services which operated as Leahy's Hire cars. The service of the the previous business commenced in 1946 at 82 Fairy Street and grew to employ up to 25 tradesmen. However the assets of the business were lost May1, 1950 when building stock and plant was destroyed by fire.In October 1950 Mr leahy purchased the freehold on the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets Warrnambool The directors of the new company were John James Leahy, John Beynon Dwyer, William John Taggart Walter, William James Croft, Martin White and James Albert Affleck. They aimed to raise 50000 pounds with 100000 shares at ten shillings each. This document shows the beginnings of one of Warrnambool's most successful 20th century companies. It lists the people associated with it from its inception many of whom were and are well known in the district. Stephen Charman, aged 21years, arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's Emigrants. 1852 he purchased 160 acres for £328 bounded by Charman Rd and Balcome Rd. 'The Spring' was an important water source for the local Aboriginal people and then for the early settlers. Charman's first wife Harriet and their infant child died and in 1850 he married a widow with 5 children, Mary Gettens. Their first home was made of wattle and daub and they had 7 more children. Later a weatherboard cottage was built c 1855 Together they developed a market garden and specialized in marigolds which were sold for medicinal purposes to the Melbourne Chemists - Martin & Pleasance . The first Methodist Church Services were held at Spring Grove and the Charmans donated land in 1857 for the first Chapel, Cemetery and Primary School . Mary died 1870 and Stephen married again and moved to Gippsland where he died aged 85 in 1906 Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. Charman Road Cheltenham was a boundary of their land.
