Cast Iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such foundries in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into molds usually made of sand. The alloys needed a minimum of 2% carbon. Alan Charles Quinn went to sea at the age of 16 and photographed his work and the places he visited. In keeping all of his photographs he created a pictorial autobiography.
