This book was awarded to Mary Elizabeth Pyers in 1886 for a prize for repetition of hymns. Mary entered Clarendon Ladies' College in 1886. In the original register Mary's married name became Mrs. Duncan, father's christian name is listed as George, his occupation as squatter and his residence as Lawler Station Donald. "Mrs. Duncan (M. Pyers).-Early in the year Mrs. Duncan was appointed a "Justice of the peace." In April, during the ceremony of unveiling a "Pioneer Memorial" at the Minyip Hospital, a sun-dial was erected on the front lawn inscribed thus: "Erected by Welfare League to Mary Duncan in appreciation of her life's work for the district, 1929." Mrs. Duncan was particularly pleased with a congratulatory message from Clarendon and declares that "so much of the 'better things' for which I have been chosen are on account of early influence and wise guidance, especially from dear Mrs. Kennedy." (The Touchstone, December, 1929, p. 5.)Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown cloth with black and gilt illustration on front cover and spine. ... awards ...Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. The award was was introduced to commemorate the long years of service to tertiary education in Ballarat by Mr Richards. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antarctica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Award - Pewter Mug Trophies - Ross and Malcolm Milne - Australian National Championships 1971 Open Men's Slalom
This Pewter Mug Collection is a set of 32 trophies won by Australian Alpine skiers Ross and Malcolm Milne between 1959 and 1964. Ross and Malcolm grew up on their family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, and began skiing at Falls Creek at an early age. They were both taught by Austrian Sigi Haberzettl, who was chief coach at Falls Creek for 17 years. Ross went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Malcolm became a member of the Australian Junior Ski Team to Japan at the age of 14. He won all of the NEDSA children’s races and won the State Title in 1966. Malcolm continued to achieve great success, winning the Australian Championships for the next five years. At the end of 1969 he won Gold in the Val d'Isere FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Downhill, Australia's first Alpine Ski World Cup medal. He was on the Australian National Ski Team for eight years, representing his country at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and the 1966 and 1970 World Championships before turning professional in 1972. Malcolm Milne was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to skiing. In 2004, Ski & Snowboard Australia granted Milne Life Membership for the contribution he made to the sport by becoming the first World Cup medal winner in Australian winter sports history, and the subsequent impact his performances have had on future athletes. Malcolm Milne was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to skiing in 2016.This item is significant because it is part of a collection which documents the career of two outstanding Australian sportsmen.A pewter mug awarded for Australian National Championships 1971 Open Men's Slalom third place. DOUGLAS GEORGE PHILLIPS enlisted No 3449 in the 11th reinforcements 7th Batt AIF on 14.7.1915 aged 18 years 2 months in Bendigo. He embarked for Eygpt on 18.12.1915. Promoted to Corporal 1.3.1916. Embarked for France 26.3.1916. Promoted to Sergeant 10.8.1916. Hospitalised with trench feet on 6.11.1916. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant 3.3.1917. Hospitalised with haemoptysis 20.7.1917. Promoted to Lieutenant 30.9.1917. WIA 4.10.1917 and remained on duty. Awarded the Military Cross for the same days actions. Discharged from the AIF 15.8.1919. He enlisted again on 28.9.1939 as V80050. At discharge on 12.3.1945 he was a Captain serving in No 12 Australian Garrison Coy. Ornate wood frame with glass over a brownish background. This book was awarded to Ewen Wanliss in 1891 for first prize for Greek in the VI form. Ewen enrolled at Ballarat College in 1888 at the age of 15 along with his brothers David, Cecil, Newton, Sydney and Neville. Ewen's father was Hon. T. D. Wanliss and his previous school was Toorak College IV class. The Wanliss family grew up in Wanliss House Sturt St, which was bought by the school in 1910. The house remained on the property until 1996. "Ewen Wanliss was born on 24th September 1873 and died in 1966. He was educated at Ballarat College, enrolled in1888, and was Captain of the College 1st XI and 1st XVIII in 1892. He served as 327 Pte E Wanliss, 4th (Imperial) Contingent, and as a Lieutenant (20th August 1900) with the 4th Imperial Bushmen in the South African War."
