Joseph Ringland Anderson was born in Killylea, Ulster, Ireland in March 1854. At the age of 18 he joined the Presbyterian Church at Killylea by profession of faith. He studied at Queen's College, Galway, and graduated M.A. He then studied Theology at the General Assembly's Theological Hall, Belfast. In 1881 he decided to emigrate to Australia, and completed his theological education at Ormond College, Melbourne. He was ordained in 1882 and inducted into the Presbyterian Church at Penshurst, Victoria. While at Penshurst he married Annie Love Elder. He was called to Lilydale in 1893, to Beechworth in 1902, to North Carlton in 1907 and 1913, was inducted into the Kew Presbyterian Church. Retired and demitted 1926. William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950. St. Andrew's Uniting Church, formerly the Presbyterian church includes two different church buildings as well as a new addition built at the rear of the 1904 red brick building. A small weather board structure was used as a church until the Romanesque brick building opened in 1904. Sanders was a well-known local potter who worked for a time with David Boyd at the Martin Boyd Pottery, before returning to Melbourne where he had some association with Arthur Boyd, at the pottery in Murrumbeena. Sanders set up a studio in Eltham in the early 1950s and made the first of a series of architectural ceramic murals with painter and print maker Lawrence Daws in 1956. In 1957 he left for Europe and while there was inspired by the Spanish artist Joan Miro’s unconventional painting style and large scale murals, in particular Wall of the Moon (1957). After returning from his travels in Europe to Australia in 1964, he began to work solely on creating ceramic murals, some of which were commissioned for Southland Shopping Centre in Cheltenham, Melbourne, 1968 (now demolished), the National Mutual Centre, Melbourne,1964-5 (now demolished), Dee Why Library, Sydney 1966, Woden Valley High School, ACT, 1967, Tullamarine Airport Melbourne, 1969-70 (now demolished), Perth Concert Hall, 1971 and The University of Melbourne,1975 (with John Olsen). This mural is one of only three remaining in the public realm by Tom Sanders (the others are at the Perth Concert Hall (1971) and at the University of Melbourne (1975).
