Tobacco farming began circa 1960 in the Kiewa Valley and consequently became one of its major industries. Many of the Italian families were involved in tobacco farming.Historical: This equipment was used on one of the tobacco farms in the Kiewa Valley. The Tying Horse was home-made showing the resourcefulness of farmers living in the Kiewa Valley. Provenance: The tobacco farmer came from Italy and was sponsored to visit a tobacco farmer in Myrtleford to learn how to grow tobacco so that he could transfer those skills to his own farm in the Kiewa Valley.Burley tobacco stick is different to Hicks type stick. Tying of green leaf on the sticks - with the twine attached. There is small sharp metal blade on the end of the horse used for cutting twine. Rectangular wooden frame. The beam along the bottom is kept in place by 2 diagonal planks on each side and at both ends. The beam keeps the frame upright with 2 cross beams at each end. This medical / hospital instrument was used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was built in the 1950's specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Two have a sphere in the middle with a long thin hollow cylinder at one end and a similar one at the other end except this one continues into the sphere and ends in a hook. The other instrument consists of a hollow cylinder that curves at the bottom and goes into a hollow ball. The ball has one small hollow appendage coming out at an angle and another short wide round hollow cylinder at its top. A darning mushroom such as this was a common household item in Australia up to the 1950s. Socks were mostly made of wool and when holes appeared, (particularly in the heel) they had to be darned, usually in a criss-cross pattern. The darning mushroom gave the darner a good smooth and stable surface. Many of these darning tools were homemade. The darner could also have been used to mend torn sleeves or other items of clothing. Some people may still use a darning mushroom today but in general socks are not darned but disposed of when holes appear. This darning mushroom has no known local provenance but it is a good example of a household item of times past. This is a light-coloured wooden darning tool. The mushroom-shaped top is attached to a handle which is elongated at the bottom end and has a slight ridge near the base and a small hole at the end. This doily is typical of items of household linen in popular use in the 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries. It was a tradition for brides to have a 'glory box' containing linen and embroidered and crocheted articles to take to their new home. In the Words of donor, Betty Stone, … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. Francis Percival de Caux invented this endotracheal tube which was devised for use during nitrous oxide/oxygen anaesthesia. Though he wasn't the first to use a two-tube method of anaesthesia, de Caux's invention was particularly effective; in 1930 he reported having given 20,868 nitrous oxide/oxygen anaesthetics in a four year period without a fatality. A long flexible metal tube formed from tightly wound metal with a small bulbous introducer at the distal end. The tube is mostly encased in a metal and rubber sheath. The hanging was handwoven by Lilian Joyce Mann. Ms Mann owned a shop in Jacob Street which sold handmade soft toys and hand woven items. She was a gounding and life member of the Geelong Handweavers and Spinners Guild. The wool industry has been critical to the Australian economy from the early days of European settlement. The increase in wool production in the mid to late 19th century led to the need to replace the hand shears with some mechanized forms of shearing.The first commercially successful sheep shearing machinery by Frederick York Wolseley in New South Wales who was granted a patent for his machine on 28 March 1877. Many of the early settlers to North East Victoria droved sheep overland from both Sydney and South Australia and established large pastoral runs in the district. Wodonga became a major service centre for the industry and established major saleyards for the pastoral and cattle industries. The handset has the company name "Heiniger" on the side. Heiniger is a Swiss company with subsidiaries in Australia and New Zealand. This pencil was found in 1946 by Mr Jim Pelling when an old wall was being pulled down in Warrnambool. This type of pen would have been used in the 19th century and apparently produced good legible writing and the lead point never wore out. No information is available on Jim Pelling or the location of the wall.Although this pencil has no known provenance it is of considerable interest because of its finding in an old wall in Warrnambool and because of its antiquarian value. It is a good example of a writing tool of the past and the ivory handle is of particular interest. This is a pencil with a handle made of ivory with a sharpened point of metallic lead screwed on the end of it. The end of the handle has an ornamental column shape. The lead at the end is slightly bent. Accompanying the pencil is an extract from a 1946 Warrnambool Standard detailing the finding of the pencil and some handwriting from a later date. The newspaper extract is pasted on to a piece of cardboard (a piece of a Rice Bubbles packet).In blue handwriting: ‘Extract from 1946 Warrnambool Standard’ and ‘Given to Warrnambool Historical Society by Mr J.
