In early 2003 bush fires covered much of North East Victoria. Submissions were requested by the 'House Select Committee' for comment on various aspects of the fire in order to help prevent bush fires in the future.Simon Paton is a local resident of the Kiewa Valley where the bush fires occurred. He took them home for dinner, gave them new clothes and boots, and asked them about their hopes for the future. As a result of this encounter the Melbourne Newsboys Club was formed. Since 1973, the year this photo was taken, the Newsboys' Club became known as the Newsboys Foundation and now funds community organisations working with young people aged 11 – 21 years in Victoria who are experiencing disadvantage. A letter to Deputy Prime Minister Doug Anthony inviting him to speak at Legacy and his replies that he couldn't commit at that stage, the notations were updates on further contact with him to try and finalise a date. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. These documents was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. Top half of box lifts to reveal Braille writer which is bolted to a wooden base that can be lifted out. The base is secured with a metal latch. A printed sheet sent to guests for the Opening Ceremony of the National Conference of Legacy at the Victorian Arts Centre on 2 October 1998 in the presence of the Governor General of Australia, Sir William Deane. The document acted both as a ticket and an information sheet, and the event was organised by Past President Legatee D.J. Simonson.Part of documentation for the 75th Anniversary of Legacy. The photo shows the cenotaph on the steps of Parliament House in Spring St after a wreath laying ceremony. There was a picket fence around the area which was erected for occasions (see the newspaper clipping from Anzac Day in 1928 copied from item no 01204). It is possible that the stamp on the reverse, '4 24', means April 1924, also see similar photos at 01203. From articles in Trove: The temporary cenotaph was the original first world war memorial until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. The cenotaph was a half size replica of the London Symbol of Remembrance in Whitehall. It was made from timber and plaster and was initially meant to only last for the 1926 Anzac day service and be removed.
