The Ballarat School of Mines opened in the former Ballarat Circuit Court House in 1870. The court house was demolished in 1915 to make way for the Ballarat Technical Art School. Cream nylon (?) ribbon, 1.5 cm wide, wrapped around a flexible (possibly cardboard) horseshoe shape eleven cm long X 10 cm wide. A "stem" of cream rosebuds, studded with four teardrop shaped pearls, is stitched to the face of the horseshoe. A loop of the ribbon, 47.5 cm long, is attached for the bride's arm. This plaque, along with the Royal Coat of Arms 0000-731, were previously on display in the Brighton City Council's municipal chambers. Oil paint on plywood. The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is painted on black ground showing the central shield, depicting symbols of Australia's six states, which is flanked by the native Australian animals, the kangaroo and the emu. The seven-pointed Commonwealth Star surmounting the crest also represents the states and territories, a wreath of golden wattle appears below the shield. III GR on the top of the truncheon refers to King George the Third (r. 1760-1820). The truncheon was probably used by police during his reign.A heavy wooden truncheon 66 centimetres long and three centimetres diameter. There is a hole two centimetres from the top to put a lanyard through. The top seven centimetres is painted red with lettering (roman numeral 3) GR. The next nine centimetres is painted green with a gold and red crown painted on it. The next six centimetre section is yellow with gold lettering, G.P.A. and 1797 underneath. This is a set of seven colour and black and white photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour and Bendigo Victoria in 1983. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager). The Winslow races were held from approximately mid-19th century to around 1946. It began as a small picnic race club in Tobin’s paddock to a splendid race course on the property, “Green Hills” owned by Mr. John O’Keefe about one mile north of the Winslow township.. The annual meetings held on New Year’s Day drew crowds of seven to eight thousand people. This photo provides a snapshot of one of the most important and well patronised events in the district. A relaxed group of soldiers at Lone Pine, Gallipoli Peninsula in August 1915. Lone Pine, so named after a single Turkish pine on the battlefield was part of a diversionary attack to draw Turkish troops away from the main assaults elsewhere.
