An iron instrument with four or more barbed points, and a line attached to it, used at sea for striking and taking fish.” -Whitney, 1911Grain spear used to harpoon dolphins. Used by William Learmonth Esq., Chairman, Portland Municipal Council, to lay the foundation stone for the Portland Town Hall, 21st September 1863Silver Towel, engraved with decoration and inscription. Bone handle. In leather case, lined on the inner base with blue velvet, and inside the lid with cream silk. The leather case has two brass hinges and a small brass clasp.Engraved on face of trowel "PRESENTED / by the / MUNICIPAL COUNCIL / of / PORTLAND/ To / William Learmonth, Esq / their Chairman / on the occasion of his laying / the FOUNDATION STONE of / the / COUNCIL CHAMBER / 21st September, 1863". Far out to sea the water's colour is dark green and indigo, arond a rocky island. Sky is pale blue with violet clouds near horizon line and white wispy clouds above. Conservation work of sills - see notes in object file.Two windows, composed of three panels each, arranged vertically. The top and bottom panels of each window are composed of six square glass sections depicting line drawings and figurative depictions in a range of different styles. The centre panels have eight square sections, with similar styles and motifs. A double border of shades of blue in small rectangles surrounds the central sections, which are in shades of yellow, with central rectangular glass in green. Clear glass panels are set on either side of windows. -

Commissioned by State Bank to produce 5 copper bas-reliefs for 73 Percy Street, Portland. Spoke with Miss Betty Vivian (Member of the Portland Historical Society) re Portland's history. Commonwealth Bank stored objects in Melbourne (c.1991). Negotiations between Portland Historical Society and Commonwealth Bank of Australia led to gift of works to People of Portland. Stored at Council depot c.1998, retrieved for Maritime Discovery Centre display.Copper bas-relief. Depicting of port with 14 large silos and a large domed shed in background. On horizon line is a wharf with a ship berthed. In foreground left is a pier stump with wood nailed to it, and leaning on it is a large anchor with a rope tied to it.
