On Saturday, 19th April 1958 MELBOURNE TOWN HALL This handkerchief ...This handkerchief was used as a marketing material to promote the film titled "The Heavens are ours" in Greek by "New World Film Entertainment" shown at Melbourne Town Hall. There were 2000 of these printed by the company for the premiera showing. The film was later screened by the same company at Premier Theatre in November 1958 by popular demand. The handkerchief gesture had the desired effect of attracting large crowds to the show. This handkerchief's primary significance is derived from the innovative story behind its use. A white printed paper towel inscribed, in black ink, with a message in Greek to those it was handed to by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures"The inscription in Greek says: "ΦΕΡΤΕ ΤΟ ΜΑΖΥ ΣΑΣ. Θα σας χρησιμεύσει να σφουγγίσετε τα δάκρυά σας παρακολουθώντας το συγκινητικώτερο, το δραματικώτερο δράμα όλων των εποχών που θα κάνει και τις άψυχες πέτρες να ραγίσουν 'ΟΙ ΟΥΡΑΝΟΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΔΙΚΟΙ ΜΑΣ'...." In English translation it says: "BRING IT WITH YOU. Document (item) - Invitation to a Ball in the Melbourne Town Hall, City of Melbourne, 1950
... Invitation to a Ball in the Melbourne Town Hall...melbourne town hall... by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress in the Melbourne Town Hall... Invitation to a Ball in the Melbourne Town Hall Document Invitation ...The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966. A large part of this collection of civic ephemera was assembled by W. D. Birrell. This is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.ephemera, civic ephemera, civic invitations, city of melbourne, melbourne town hall, cr james s disney, w d birrell -

... December 10th 2006 at the Town Hall. Project 15 pages. Includes... at the Town Hall. Project 15 pages. Includes the program, and notes ...The Bendigo Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1981 under the auspices of Music 81, a program of the Ministry of Arts (Music) Victoria. There has been an unbroken tradition of fine music making in this city dating back to the 1890's when Bendigo had its own Conservatorium of Music. By 1945 the Bendigo Concert Orchestra was formed, and at its peak it numbered 70 musIcIans. Players from this orchestra also accompanied Bendigo Operatic Society productions. In more recent times, chamber groups, choral music groups as well as many school-based music ensembles have continued to enhance Bendigo's musical life. This practical music making was enriched, when for many years, music societies including the Bendigo Music Advancement Society and the Bendigo Music Lovers' Club, organised concerts, often featuring musIcIans of international standard.
