Slide - Images by Arthur Pulfer, 1957-1970
1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof. Mr. Lapsley was later treated for a broken bone in his right leg. Many images from by Arthur Pulfer copied to slides. Document - PETER ELLIS COLLECTION: LETTER, 24th September, 1973
Letter, dated 24th September, 1973, to Mr P N Ellis from A B Court of the Royal Botanic Gardens and National Herbarium. In the A B Court thanks Mr Ellis for his letter and for the specimen of Acacia hakeoides. He was hoping it would turn out to be the same as the one known to him from the Moon Mines area. He had searched for this species? During the last several years but had been unable to find it. He suggest that if Mr Ellis or his associates find anything of interest in the locality it might be worthwhile forwarding a specimen for examination. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GETTING THE GOLD, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. Getting the Gold. Slide: A shaft was commenced on each of these claims, but no attempt was made to sink to any depth. The party owning the claim would work elsewhere; but each, day, one of them - the ''shepherd'' - would shovel out one or two spadefuls of earth in order to preserve the party's right to the claim. This might go on for weeks, until a sinking party revealed the trend of the lead. When this was known . . . Markings: 53 994.LIF:4. Used as a teaching aid.hanimounteducation, tertiary, goldfields -

Diggers & Mining. The gold licence. The Government Camp. But without a miner's right, a digger had no right to his claim, and could be dispossessed of it by the holder of a miner's right. (As a result of the widespread dissatisfaction with the licence system which culminated at Eureka, the licence system and the system of goldfields administration by Goldfields Commissioners were abolished in 1855. For the rest of the gold decade, the digger was required to take out a miner's right - which cost 1 pound per year.
