Victorian Bands' League
Programme, Heidelberg Eisteddfod Society : Solo & Party Competitions, 03/10/1952
This small programme is for the Solo & Party Championships, incorporating a C & D Grade band contest conducted by the Heidelberg Eisteddfod Society under the patronage of the Victorian Bands' League. This part of the Eisteddfod was held from October 3rd - October 10th 1952. The program details lists of names of bands people and the instruments they played as well as numerous C & D grade bands that participated. Quite a number of the junior musicians were part of famous school and youth bands of the time. This Eisteddfod program is significant as it details a typical suburban Eisteddfod competition which included brass bands and brass musicians. The lists of names are also significant as they indicate which bands people had their start during this time and which bands they were part of. Container - Bottle, c. 1840s - 1870s
This olive green glass bottle has been handmade from about the 1840s to 1870s. The bottle, possibly used to store ale or soda or mineral water, was found in the coastal waters of Victoria. It is part of the John Chance Collection. Glassblowers made bottles like this one by blowing air through a long pipe into the molten glass blob at the end of the pipe. The glass was blown out to fit into the shape of the cylindrical dip mould. Once it hardened, the glass was removed from the mould and the glassblower would continue using the pipe to create the neck while carefully using a tool to hold the base. The base was made using a 'ponty' tool to push it up, giving a concave finish with a central 'ponty' mark. A tool would have been used to cut off the bottle from the blowpipe and a piece of soft glass would be added to the mouth to then shape the band collar. Bottles like this would usually be sealed with a cork, which may have been held in place with wax or wire and tape. Although this bottle is not linked to a particular shipwreck, it is recognised as a historically significant example of handmade, 1840s to 1870s beverage bottles imported for use in Colonial Victoria. The bottle is also significant for its association with John Chance, a diver in Victoria’s coastal waters in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Items that come from several shipwrecks have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value.Bottle, olive glass, cork top style. Roughly applied tooled lip with band, smooth body outline tapering intwards towards base. Concave base, small pontil mark, uneven base. Glass has rippled, circular blow lines. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Pilgrimage to the Shrine 1992, 1992
Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. The church used for the service varies.A record of the Widows' Sunday event for Legacy week in 1992.Colour photo x 9 of a pilgrimage to the Shrine in 1992.The paper label says "To mark the start of 'Legacy Week' members of the Legacy family gathered for the annual church service and pilgrimage to the Shrine. The haunting sound of the pipes were a stirring prelude to the pilgrimage into the inner shrine."pilgrimage, wreath laying ceremony, widows, widows' sunday -
