Black and white postcard of an electric tram towing a heavily loaded former horse tram trailer in Sturt St Ballarat. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tram does not have any destination box above the driver. Possibly summer 1905/1906. Numerous people in the street, some horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Issued by T M Burke Pty Ltd of 840 Collins St Melbourne, Real Estate agents, shows the extensive sub-divisions where land was available for purchase and notes the MMTB authorisation of new tram routes. Gives details of the T M Burke services. Routes shown as authorised (16-7-1936) are: Keilor Road Essendon, High St North Balwyn and Hawthorn Road East Brighton. Shows the central part of Ballarat, Ballarat Outlets, streets, principal attractions, Ballarat and district maps and information. Has the tram lines shown dotted, does not run out to Sebastopol or the Lydiard St North terminus. Each map in the bottom left-hand corner has the number "1061", possibly indicating the date. Has notes on the City, points of interest, and an advertisement for Caltex. See item 4929 for a larger version dated 1966. Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world who often provided him with detailed drawings and notes on various tramway systems. Drawing shows the various lines, crossing loops, depots, routes with numbers and the location of bomb damage during 1940 air raids. The gauge of the system was 3'6". The Wikipedia reference reports that the system was closed as a result of extensive damage during the air raids.
