Miss Thomas was well known in the district and for some years in business in Main Street, Ringwood. This photograph of the former site of Kelly Garden Supplies was taken in 2013 to show changes over 40 years, based on Ron Reynold’s sketches in the 1973 publication “Greensborough and Greenhills” published by Cypress Books. The site is now part of the Civic roundabout at the top of the Greensborough By-pass. Civic Drive was associated with the building of Diamond Valley Council Offices opened by Governor Rohan Delacombe on 26/2/1972. Previously it was known as Kelly's Track which wound its way around to a house that overlooked the aqueduct bridge. Kelly's Sandpit (quarry) was the local go to place to obtain road, driveway fill and red sand for local construction. Date is approximate. House was built in 1910 and has been demolished. The woman on the verandah is probably Mrs P Falconer, Ron Falconer's mother. Her full name was Emily Victoria Aird (1884-1957), daughter of James Bromich Aird and Sarah Ann (nee Edwards). She married Patrick Henry Falconer on 11 December 1907 in Blackburn. The Falconer family lived in Albert Crescent for many years. Listed in electoral rolls in 1916 through to the 1950s. By 1963 the family were at 33 Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills. Emily and Patrick Henry Falconer had 4 children: Ronald Keith (b1908); Hilda Irene (b 1910); Harold Leslie (b 1913) and Hilah (b 1915). A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. 1993 was Legacy's 70th Anniversary and the luncheon followed the WWI meeting on Thursday 12th August. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward (seen in the Answer newsletter article with his mother Myrtle). Ron Austin, a World War 1 veteran spoke to entertain the ladies.The photos include George Woodward adding a moustache on another legatee. See also 00908 for black and white photos of the same day. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this publication include:- Page 2: Toni St Elmo sent a list of Bogong Ski Club members who had passed N.Z. tests during their tour of New Zealand in 1950. Page 10 - 12 An extensive article (Falls Creek", written by Pauline McLean who had spent several holidays there. It includes travel requirements and restrictions and the need to acquire provisions. Reference is made to lodges including the "Skyline" and to Bill Hymans and Ron Roberts' refreshment kiosk at the foot of the tow. Page 13 Toni St Elmo is planning to have a ski tow installed for the coming season. Set of three MTT Adelaide Tramway Passes used by Ron Wearne of the Victorian Tramways Social Cricket Association when visiting Adelaide. Each have a cloth cover, covering two pieces of heavy card, with a metal eyelet in the bottom left hand corner, numbers, name of person available to, date of available to and signed by the "Secretary" printed on a separate sheets and glued to the inside. The conditions of travel also printed on a separate sheet and glue to the inside. Orange cloth covered book, 116 pages + covers and end pages, "MMTB Electric Tramways and Motor Omnibuses Sections and Fares", dated August 1975. Details the various section stages and fares for each tram and bus route, General instructions, concession fares and has photos or drawings of the various special tickets, eg passes or prepaid tickets. Book consists of four sections, sewn with end papers part of the covers. Second copy added 15-6-2015 - from Ron Scholten donation of 11-4-2015. The photo was taken on Empire Day 1930, which was then celebrated on 24 May. The assorted fancy dress probably represents the various countries belonging to the British Empire. One girl (wearing the stovepipe hat?) has the same surname as the donor, presumably the donor's daughter. The information regarding the identities of the other children is therefore trustworthy.The photograph shows how Empire Day was celebrated and by implication how it was understood. Ship to Shore was first printed in 1997. Inspired by the Jottings From Our Log, this modern version is generally published quarterly (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring) Articles are written by the mission's staff and give updates about shipping and seafaring news, staff, events, board Committee, heritage. It is sent by post or email to supporters, members, volunteers and friends of the mission.
