Donated by founder, Mother Gonzaga Barry's, brother, John Barry, to Loreto's Ballarat school, Mary's Mount, in 1887. Brought back by Mother Gonzaga on her return from Europe in 1887. Maintained by Captain Henry Evans Baker, Superintendent of the Oddie Observatory, Mount Pleasant Ballarat, who subsequently made the students a telescope. Used in the curriculum for the study of astronomy.Connection with founder of Loreto in Australia and her family. Evidence of early curriculum. Presented to the Bishop of Ballarat, Dr. James Moore, when he laid the foundation stone for the new schoolroom/residential wing at Loreto Mary's Mount. A decorative artefact manufactured by an early Ballarat jeweller. Thought to have belonged to founder, Mother Gonzaga Barry. One of of early furnishings of the convent.Small wood writing desk with drawers on right hand side and false drawers on left. Leather inlaid top with gilded pattern. Hinged lid and hinged top storage.

One of original religious artefacts used in the Loreto Chapel. Although no maker's mark, opals would indicated Australian made.Gold coloured monstrance. (Receptacle in which the Holy Eucharist was kept as well as placed for public adoration.) At the top is a large round structure, rayed like the sun - 'viril' and inside the viril is a glass section for holding the host - 'vidriera'. Highly decorated and surrounded by gem stones and opals.

Words on the building on the south west corner of Sturt Street are visible. "NATIONAL MUTUAL BUILDING". This building was used by Mark's Jewellers, and then Allan Bros. Jewellers. The next building has the writing "ARGUS" and Printers, Bookbinders, Stationers, on it. This was known as Berry Anderson's. I suspect that these are photographs before the celebrations for the coronation. Richard Bell was born in Dumfermline, Scotland in 1850, arriving in Victoria with his family as a child. He worked at the grocery store of W.L. Wilson, Skipton Street, Sebastopol for six years before opening his own grocery business on the corner of Drummond and South Streets, Ballarat. The business was successful and he retired 15 years later. He was elected to the Ballarat City Council in 1891, and in 1892 he started an auctioneering and sharebroking business in partnership with Mr Lambert. Organisations such as the Ballarat Woollen Company and the Ballarat Tramway Board benefited from Richard Bell's association with them, and he was the Director of many mining companies. He was a member of the Old Colonists' Association of Ballarat, the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute and the Commercial Club. Richard Bell was interest in erecting statues in Sturt Street to the memory of the poets Burns and Moore, and served on the relevant committee to that end. He was a long term truster of the Miners' Association, and took a very active part in the South Street Debating Society. In April 1874 Richard Bell married Jessie Scott, and the couple had two sons and seven daughters. All documents have rounded corners. .1 - Memorandum on SEC paper, light green sheet, dated 18/7/1962 from the Engineer and Manager of the SEC to the Manager Ballarat Branch, regarding the Courier's reports and the Parliamentary report. .2 - Memorandum on a green sheet forwarding Press cuttings and the Work's Superintendent's report re the derailment. .3 - Handwritten report dated 4/7/1962 re the derailment, three sheets on ruled paper, cause of the derailment, works to repair, derailment of 36 at the same location on 3/7 (twice), trackwork issues, track repairs being undertaken and comments re The Courier's reporting.
