Diary covers the period from 9 March 1917 to 10 February 1918 on the Western Front. Lowe was later (Aug 1918) to be awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the Somme. Military Medal 'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this man, just previous to the attack showed great devotion to duty in laying and maintaining alternative routes up to the front line, and after the attack had commenced he acted as linesmen, and throughout the operation, during which the lines were cut on several occasions, he went out under heavy shell and machine gun fire and repair the lines thereby enabling communication to be maintained and valuable information reaching Headquarters without delay. His splendid example inspired his comrades to volunteer to continue this most important work should he become a casualty.' Small booklet produced by the Australian Branch of the Red Cross Society, Headquarters and Central Depot, with guidelines for making donations of goods such as clothing, linen, blankets, bandages, books and food items to the Australian War effort and instructions for knitting woollen items of clothing intended for defence personnel on active service. The booklet is not dated however it is from the WW1 era and has twenty pages.The booklet front page has the following text: "RED CROSS SOCIETY", "AUSTRALIAN BRANCH", "Headquarters and Central Depot" and a note printed in red "When forwarding parcels, send by post complete duplicate list with number of each article to Officer-in-Charge." This is a photograph of crew members that formed the football team of the S.S. Hororata. The vessel was ordered by the New Zealand Shipping Co Ltd of London, completed in 1914. In august of that year she was requisitioned ( as A20) for transport of the Australian expeditionary force in WW1. In WW2 she was known as the SS Waroonga and torpedoed in 1943. (Internet ref 2018) This vessel was a regular visitor to Melbourne and crews visited and contributed donations to the MTS.This photograph provides an early record of the many crew based football (soccer) teams that would enjoy matches when ashore with other crews. The Mission to seamen organised and promoted many such matches and encouraged the friendly competition during outings. In addition this particular group photograph is of interest as it indicates the many talents and interests of the crew through the items and animals the individuals are posed with. These trousers are from the Light brigade, and therefore would have an interesting history and research value. If this item was attached to other items connected to the wars,WW1, WW2, it could good interpretive history. Unfortunately we do not know who they belonged to, but since they were donated to the UC op shop it may be a local person in the Kiewa Valley. Jan 2013 - We have just found out these trousers are infact from the German Army from WW1 and would have been brought back home by one of local soldiers who were in the light horse, which a few men from Tawonga served in.If this item was donated by a local person, this would make it very signfigant due to attached social history about that person. Therefore significance would be, historic, re light brigade history, and the German Army, since we now know these are German Army pants. Research value as above. Miniature model of a WW2 era Avro Anson twin engine aircraft mounted on an ashtray. The aircraft is supported by a curved arm attached to the circular ashtray base. The base has a small metal RAAF 'winged eagle' insignia attached to the front edge. The items have been made from chromed metal materials. The RAAF was equipped with Avro Anson aircraft in the late 1930 period prior to WW2. These aircraft were used by the RAAF for general and maritime reconnaissance and training throughout WW2 and into the early 1950s. These books are part of the Lawless Collection. The Lawless family lived in Orbost from 1907 - c 1920. John Francis Lawless had a saddlery shop. He died at an early age - 47 years - June 7 1912, leaving his wife, Elizabeth and seven children. The eldest son, Victor Rowland lawless volunteered for serv ice in WW1 but did not leave Australia because of illness. The second son, Edward Vincent Lawless (b 1895 d 1917) worked for McCoy & Co. in Orbost, coachbuilding, undertakers, general blacksmiths and farriers, prior to enlisting in WW!. He was trained as a signaller and was sent to France where he was killed in action on 9.10.1917. Elizabeth Lawless worked as a ladies' nurse (midwife) in Orbost prior to leaving the district in 1920. A puttee is a cloth band that was wound round a soldier’s leg from their ankle to their knee. They were designed to provide support when walking and protect against harsh weather conditions. Many Australian soldiers developed a painful medical condition during their service on the Western Front called trench foot. The primary causes were wet feet and unsanitary conditions but puttees were also partly to blame as they limited circulation to the lower leg and foot. These puttees are a collectors item, they are the real thing, used in WW1 and made a short return in WW2 and were used as ceremonial dress in Malaysia in the 1960s, these ones are WW2 issue. The scarf was designed to provide information on escape routes if the soldier/pilot was captured. The City of Kew (1860-1994) was a municipality within the boundaries of suburban Melbourne, bordering on the inner suburbs. It was governed by a Council who employed council officers and workers. Services offered to ratepayers included garbage collection. Workers also carried our rubbish removal. From the evidence of photographs, garbage trucks has a semi-circular top with openings on the side of the top and at the rear. Rubbish carts were simple open top containers. Both garbage trucks and rubbish carts were drawn by horses and, in the interwar years and after, operated out of the Council Depot in High Street (formerly the 'horse tramway' sheds and later was to be replaced by the Kew Recreation Centre. The depot was on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets, kew. Small, original black and white positive photograph of a City of Kew horse and garbage cart.
