Book, Tom Wallis Louis Becke, Early 20th century
This book, ‘Tom Wallis’ written by Louis Becke was awarded as a third prize to Bertie Wilson by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. Grasmere is a small settlement about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool and was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists prior to the founding of Warrnambool. The Grasmere Presbyterian Church and Sunday School were established in 1898 though services had been held prior to this date in an older church which was converted at that time to house the Sunday School. The Sunday School was burnt down in 1914 and later rebuilt. Mr Paton, the Sunday School teacher in 1910, was on the Board of Management of the church in 1911. This book is significant because it is a memento of the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School of 1910. Sunday School attendance was a strong feature of the religious, educational and social life of many children in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sunday Schools still operate but have fewer children attending in relation to the numbers of Protestant churches adherents. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages plus several pages at the end detailing other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is dark red with an illustration in black, red and grey colours of two sailors aboard a ship. The book was a prize given to Bertie Wilson from the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. There are several illustrations (black and white plates) inserted throughout the book. The inscription plate has both printed and handwritten material. The colours on the cover, particularly on the spine, are somewhat faded. Front Cover: ‘Tom Wallis, Louis Becke’. Inscription Plate: ‘Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School, Third Prize, Awarded to Bertie Wilson, Mr Paton Teacher, Xmas, 1910’bertie wilson, grasmere presbyterian sunday school, warrnambool -

Booklet, Love sweetens truth, 1880s
This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink. The book is a little scuffed at the edges of the cover. ‘Ormiston House College, East Melbourne, Principals, The Misses Singleton, Prize for Writing and Maps in Upper Third Class Awarded to Miss Middleton, Christmas 1887.’ dr john singleton, ormiston house, history of warrnambool -

Artwork, Troy Firebrace, 'A Galaxy Swirl' by Troy Firebrace, 2015
Troy FIREBRACE (c1994-) Country/Language: Yorta Yorta Troy is a Shepparton born Yorta Yorta man, whose career is on the rise after winning the prestigious Federation University Acquisitive Award for Work by a Victorian Regional Artist at the 10th Victorian Indigenous Art Awards. He completed Year Twelve at Shepparton Secondary College in 2010, and in 2015 Troy was studying Creative Arts at La Trobe University, Bendigo where he has pursued his interest in his Aboriginal identity and art. He is largely influenced by the art of his Uncle Chris Firebrace and he enjoys the design aspects of creating a painting. Usually Troyʼs works contain a narrative, or at least hint of a meaning that he would like to convey to people. Influenced by the imagery of his Aboriginal cultural background he works at bringing together references of landscape, environmental processes and concerns, looking at the way in which we as humans relate to the natural world. Troy seeks to find and demonstrate a connection between humanity and the environment, exploring the idea of harmonious co-existence. Artist's statement: "‘Stories are being told and shared like particles in the universe, a constant swirl of words filled with emotions creating a pattern — explosions — smashing into each other creating a layering effect — creating worlds, planets — well nourished and suited to sustain life, and from this life new stories will emerge, to be told, to be shared — a continuous galaxy swirl. I like the idea that we are a part of something bigger — yes, the earth is massive, but we are just a speck of something far beyond the Milky Way itself.” The work was inspired by the work of abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock, science and space. This work won the 2015 Victorian Indigenous Art Awards Federation University Acquisitive Award for work by a Victorian regional artist. His canvas 'A Galaxy Swirl' was described by judges as ‘‘a vibrant and dynamic painting that, as the artist explains, epitomises a bringing together of modernism and Aboriginal arts’’.victorian indigenous art awards, troy firebrace, artwork, artist, indigenous, aboriginal, painting, indigenous artist -
