Harry Gillham, President and EDHS and Convenor of the Nillumbik Shire Council's Advisory Committee for the War memorial at Kangaroo Ground was for some years working on the refurbishment of the Tower of Rememberance and the surrounding park. The Committee decided to produce plaques to commemorate the armed conflicts in Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam. The plaques were funded by public donations and cost $10,000. The community donated via donation boxes placed at Eltham Library. Notification of a meeting of citizens willing to assist in organising a carnival in aid of the St Kilda Memorial Hall building fund and local charities. The date given is Wednesday 13 February. It would have been 13 February 1929 because the Mayor is identified as Thos Unsworth, who served as Mayor in 1928-29. The Memorial Hall commemorates those who served in World War I, was officially opened on Armistice Day, 1924, and operated as a dance and social hall. In January 1927 the Health Department gave permission for it to operate as the Memorial Cinema. Commemorative trowel from Wesley Church St Kilda, 22 October 1857. Alexander Fraser (1802-1888), businessman and politician. Fraser lived at St Kilda and in 1857 was elected to its first Municipal Council; in 1859 he became chairman and mayor in 1864-65. An active churchman, he held most important offices in the Wesleyan Church and for thirty years was treasurer of the supernumerary fund, which he helped Rev. Daniel Draper to found. Dour and pious, Fraser was conscientious in fulfilling his political duties. He presided at numerous meetings and laid countless foundation stones.Silver trowel with polished wooden handle. Windcheater which the midwives in old E1 had made and were sold to staff to fund raise. Some proceeds were to assist midwives attend state conferences. Other fundraising activities were also undertaken at that time to modify the stark hospital environment of E1 to a more homely environment. Graphic artist and seamstress, Geraldine Roberts of Wendouree, made the windcheaters as well as screen printed the logo which the staff designed. Geraldine also did the graphics for an educational booklet the staff produced for expectant parents. Rotunda, Alexandra Gardens (1910-c.1960). The Alexandra Gardens’ rotunda was located within three acres of ‘gem like’ gardens ‘bright with verdant lawns and choice blooms’ in the centre of Kew. Designed by architects Grainger and Little, the ornate two-storey wooden kiosk functioned as a children’s shelter on the ground level and a bandstand and oratory dais on the upper. Funded by council and community subscription, it was a ‘symbol of the public spirit of Victoria’ and a Kew Jubilee commemoration memorial. Opened in 1910, the Kew Brass Band christened it the ‘finest band rotunda in Melbourne’. Deterioration saw its demise 50 years later. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The Koroit railway station began operations in 1889, with a brick building replacing an original timber structure in 1907.Once a major junction station between the Port Fairy Line and the branch to Penshurst and Hamilton, train services to Koroit ceased in 1977. The track at Koroit has long been removed. The station itself however has been preserved with heritage funding keeping it looking close to its working condition. The Albury Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen’s Club traces its origins back to the Albury and District War Services Hall Appeal Committee. This group of the World War I diggers, service groups and parents of men serving in World War II set out to raise 14,000 pounds for a Services Memorial Hall. After the war ended, the Memorial Hall Fund was far short of its target. Also, different attitudes prevailed when the boys came home. Instead of a memorial hall, the idea of a licensed club gained favour. This was to be not merely for RSL men who had served overseas, but for many ex-servicemen who had not left Australia. Using the Memorial Hall Fund, the RSL bought the old Commercial Club buildings at 611 Dean Street, which had been a Service Rest Room throughout the war and up to February 1946. The SS&A Club was formally opened in October 1946 and was registered under the Liquor Act in 1947. The foundation stone of the new building in Olive Street was laid by Lt General Sir John Northcott, May 2, 1959. The building was opened July 15,1960 by Governor of NSW, Sir Eric Woodward. The school's 326 pupils walked about 2750 kilometres on a fund raising walkathon . Principal Rob Bloye said the event raised about $5000 for the new hall's heating and carpet. Mr Bloye said the $90,000 school hall would be finished by the start of the next school year. "The hall is a co-operative project, which means it has been fundfed by the community without any government grants", he said.

The Orbost Education Centre is a community based not-for-profit local organisation. It has been in operation since 1976. The programs respond to the needs of the community and short courses are delivered throughout the year for people of all ages and backgrounds. The basis is promoting learning, connectedness and belonging. It is supported by funding from the community, state government and non-government organisations. TAFE offered adult education to those new out of school and mothers coming out of motherhood as well as others. The Tawonga School was a weatherboard building built on 8 acres of land catering for children from the surrounding grazing farms to ride their horses to school. It opened on 27th July 1880. The original school building and records were erased by fire in 1900. The Tawonga hall was used until 1910 when 3 acres of land was donated by Frank Cooper. It still operates today (2015) with its numbers having fluctuated over the years with the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, tobacco farming and now tourism. The Tawonga community published a cook book to celebrate the school's centenary.This book may have also been used as a fund raiser.The Tawonga school celebrated its centenary with a cookbook with contributions from the community. This cookbook was produced by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums, partly as a fund-raiser and partly as a promotional exercise. A Pipe Band was formed in Warrnambool in 1906 with twelve foundation members. Simon Fraser was the original Pipe Major and the band has had some changes of name since its foundation. The band was not operating for some time during the years of World War One and again during World War Two but today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs at concerts, dinners, band competitions, official functions, street parades etc and has won both Victorian and interstate Championship titles. This book is of interest as an example of a fund-raising exercise by a local organization early in the 21st century. This is a soft-cover book of 94 pages. It is a cookery book published by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. It has a blue cover overlaid with plastic and is bound with plastic rings. A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Before the increase of air transport, everything that arrived or departed from Australia did so via the ports and wharves. The Mission to Seafarersis not a Victorian initiative, but rather a global network that currently operates in over 260 ports worldwide, assisting over 1.3 million seafaring men and women each year. The importance of the Mission’s role is demonstrated in the Chaplain’s Report 1947, which notes that ships and their crews are: “...inextricably linked with the well-being of Australian industrial and economic life... This, in turn, means that you cannot escape some share in responsibility for their welfare.” This window, titled ‘Noli Me Tangere’, was installed in memoriam of Moira Oliver, the wife of the Reverend Frank Oliver, chaplain at the Mission 1930-60, and whose dedication in life and service to the welfare of seafarers was inspirational to many.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. The Committee of Management held monthly meetings and "the members were conscientious in their attendance". 1938/1939 were busy years for the Orbost Hospital as there was a serious outbreak of poliomyelitis and some cases had to be sent on to Sale. There was also pressure from Dr Nettleton to begin a garbage collection in the town to clean up the town As the polio epidemic abated, diptheria took over and Dr Nettleton urged the shire to fund a further free immunisation campaign. In February, 1939t here were major bush fires in the district and the fire came within 300 yards of the Orbost Hospital. Home is a collection of birdhouses on floating islands using the iconic form of the human house - a pitched roof, square walls, windows and doors. This minimal form is often drawn by children; a dolls house, a cubby house, a letter-box or a chook house. Home creates a safe refuge for birds with the plants acting as a water filtration system. The exposed roots draw out pollutants, such as nitrogen, phosphorous and toxic metals, which have entered the waterway through urban run-off. The result is a beautiful sculptural experience and a healthier water system for all to enjoy. Matilda was a Merino ewe who went missing for over 5 years on cattle country just outside of Hamilton. When she was found she had over 30 kgs of fleece that needed to be shorn. She was shorn in Melbourne's Federation Square in 2005. Her fleece was then processed into fabric by CSIRO. The fleece made enough fabric for six jackets. The jackets were auctioned at Crown Palladium Ballroom in March of that year. The winners had their jacket tailored to their measurements by Blazzer. All profits from the auction went to Celebration of Life, a fund established to support Victoria's Royal Children’s Hospital neonatal unitFour samples of wool in the different stages of process. The Axis Kettle was developed through the EcoRedesign project funded by the Federal Government and based at RMIT in the 1980s and 1990s. The project involved the expertise of significant Victorian designers such as Paul Taylor, Gerry Mussett, Liam Fennessy and Michael Grima, as well as prominent sustainability experts such as academics John Gertsakis, Chris Ryan and Alan Pears. Axis changed the way kettles were used, guiding users to save resources through their behaviour. It is regarded globally by academics from prominent design institutions such as Loughborough and Delft as one of the first successful eco-design projects. Situated 150 miles from Sydney and 50 miles from Bathurst, Hawkin's Hill mining leases had produced good returns in the 1860's and 70's. However, a lack of working capital meant that many of the mines operated by up to 17 different companies petered out. About 1886 efforts were made to consolidate these claims but insufficient funding could be found. With the renewal of an offer of a government subsidy and the sale of shares, has allowed the purchase of these old claims and their infrastructure. Exploration has shown that these old mines still contained payable amounts of gold. Thus the formation of the Amalgamated Hill End Company.Typewritten letter dated 2nd February 1911.
