Orbost & District Historical Society
cash book, 1893-1899
This ledger was used by the Shire of Orbost from 1893-1899 . The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council This is a handwritten record of the financial transactions of the first Obost Shire Council. This council no longer exists having been absorbed by the East Gippsland Shire Council.A specially printed cash book with a brown cover and lighter brown binding. It has marbled end covers. Dr. Leonhard Adam studied both Anthropology and Jurisdiction as a young man. Dr. Leonhard Adam's daughter, Mary Clare Adam Murvitz presented this collection of her Father's printed archival material to Tatura Museum on 17.2.2006. In 1934 he fled from Germany seeking refuge in England. In 1940 he was interned as a security risk in England, sent to Australia in June, 1940. Interned in Camp 2 until 1942, released to Melbourne University where he catalogued aboriginal artefacts.Brown and cream hard cover book with red writing on the spine. Gwendoline Mudford was born in Flemington on 11 April 1914 and was appointed to the Police Depot for training on 11 February 1941. Her Record of Conduct of Service describes her as being 5'5" tall and weighing 9st 10lb, with brown eyes, light brown hair and medium complexion. Despite showing great promise of being a successful police woman she was forced to resign on 3 September 1941 due to her impending marriage.
