The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. Photos 051/267 and 051/268 are 2 copies (one named) of a black and white photograph showing a Working Bee at the Menzies Creek Hall site. Photos 051/269 is a close up of the left side of the photo, showing Carol King, Grace Martin, Barbara Haig and Mrs Haig, along with Lyn Hermon (baby) and Jay Hermon (toddler). Photo 051/270 is a close-up of Rodney Haig, with Mr Martin in the background wearing a hat. Other men can be seen in the background. The photo shows the land being cleared in preparation for the building of the Mnezies Creek Hall in 1953. Tall trees are in the middle and background. The hall is situated on the south-east corner of Belgrave-Gembrook Road and School Road.

Now 100 years old, this quilt belonged to the donor’s grandfather John William Huffstutter. John was Born in 1898 in a log cabin in the Ozark mountains of Missouri, USA. Tragically, John’s mother died when he was four years old. John said that he could always remember her voice calling his name as he hid under the porch in one of the many thunderstorms that frequent the area with his dog. John was raised by his grandmother and was treated as the youngest to her other children, growing up with his aunties and uncles rather than brothers and sisters. John began to study engineering at the State University of Iowa before serving in the US Army Engineer Corps in The Great War. He enlisted when he became eligible and served briefly before the Great War ended. He then returned to his engineering studies in Iowa, and shortly after finishing his studies got his first job with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh at age 23. It was when John was leaving for this job that he was given the quilts as a reminder of home from his grandmother Sarah Jane "Sallie" Tindall Coble, and her daughter (John's Aunt) Ottie Maude Coble Bittick. Widowed at age 78, John took to sleeping in his screen porch under one of these quilts. John remembered one winter in Missouri waking in his log cabin to find snow covering him and his quilt. When he died at age 94, the quilt he used was completely worn out and discarded. This remaining quilt was shipped to Australia, where Carol’s (the donor) immediate family had emigrated in 1970. Opening the box that contained the quilt released a wave of comforting smells, emotions, and a flood of childhood memories. Carol distinctly remembers sleeping under these quilts for afternoon naps at her grandparents' house. The quilt is 74 x 80 inches (1880 x 2030mm), matching the size of a modern-day king bed. It is made of various four-inch (100mm) squares. These squares are made of old men woollen suits in dark colours of browns and greys. The quilt is layered with a wool backing fabric and a batting lawyer of unknown material, possibly cotton or wool. The quilt is tied together with red wool yarn and the backing fabric is folded over the edge to be used as a binding. Embroidered across the front of the quilt in purple wool yarn is "John Huffstutter", "13 Oct 1921". A small, printed cloth label "HUFFSTUTTER" is pinned on the reverse of the quilt. The quilt is well-worn but in good condition considering its age. The care instructions passed down by word of mouth with the quilt were to "never wash, only air".Front embroidered. These bottles came from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. This factory in Koroit Street, Warrnambool was established in the 1860s as the Union Cordial Factory by John Davis and then bought by John Fletcher in 1885. Fletcher’s business continued until 1930 when it was bought by Ralph Reeves. Coming to Warrnambool about 1900 Ralph Reeves managed a Banyan Street cordial factory which had been established by John Rowley. Ralph Reeves bought a business in 1916 at Hamilton and sold it in 1929 to concentrate on the Warrnambool business. Reeves was joined by his son Reg in Warrnambool and Reg operated the business from 1946 to 1972. The trade name of Reeves was still used after Reg Reeves died and continued on for some years.These bottles are of significance as they come from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. Reeves and his son Reg operated this business for 40 years. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. These are five glass bottles with a rounded body, a round base and a smaller rounded neck. The tops are made of moulded glass and the stoppers are made of cork with a brown top. The name of the maker of the aerated waters is impressed into the glass on the side of the bottles.‘This bottle always remains the property of R.V. This bottle is of interest as an example of a lemonade bottle form Reeves Cordial Factory in Warrnambool. The Reeves family operated this business in Warrnambool for 40 years. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This is a clear glass lemonade bottle with a round base, a rounded body and a smaller circular neck with a screw top stopper made of composite material. A metal handle is attached to the neck section and it has a coil of metal on the handle for easier handling. James Rogers was born in Wallaroo, South Australia, but came to Sailor's Gully, Eaglehawk with his family as an infant. He was converted in a Salvation Army meeting at Bendigo. He became a member of the Primitive Methodist Church at Eaglehawk. This King George III 1797 penny, colloquially described as a ‘Cartwheel’ because of its large size and thick rim, was manufactured in Great Britain from 1797-99. The penny and the twopence were the first coins shipped to New South Wales by the British Government. In 1800, Governor King issued a proclamation that forbade their export. This coin is one of the 132,000 coins sent to Australia in 1800. It is not uncommon to find cartwheel pennies used as containers. They were reputedly used to conceal a more valuable coin or for smuggling. The penny was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.This cartwheel penny, used to contain a lock of hair of Thomas Henty (1775-1838), is of statewide significance to Tasmania, where he settled and died, and to Victoria, where his children and their descendants were notable pioneers, squatters and subsequently landowners in the Western District. The item is also of national significance for its strong connection to the Henty family, notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia in the 1830s. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Thomas Henty was the father of Stephen George Henty of 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District and 'Field Place', Kew. The article describes a fire incident which took place in January 1965 at Swan Lake, a water reserve at the entrance to Summerland Peninsula, Phillip Island. Due to an extremely heavy infestation of gorse (noxious weed) and natural tea tree scrub, along with poor vehicle access, the volunteer fire fighters could apparently not gauge the extent of the fire. A light plane operator visiting Cr Arthur Hamilton nearby was able to fly Phillip Island Shire Engineer, Jock McKechnie, over the lake to better direct the fire fighters. Swan Lake has many Bunurong Aboriginal middens and short-tailed shearwater rookeries, and, being not far from the Penguin Parade, a fire there posed a direct threat to the birds. Nearing the 60th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings The Herald newspaper interviewed former light horsemen including Legatees Rex Hall and Bill Scott. The caption of the photo mentions that they would be leading the Anzac march mounted on horseback that year. Th ephoto shows Jim Holland, Rex Hall, and Bill Scott with Jim Rogers (seated). The rest of the article by John Hamilton describes the Gallipoli campaign. The article was part of a collection of photographs in an album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items 01027 to 01036. The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places.A record of two legatees recounting their war experiences in the press. Photos of abseiling down the Gas and Fuel building that were on the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St. It was an event for Legacy Week 1989. See also the training that occurred prior to the event - photos 00486 and 01409. Ron Barassi abseils for Legacy joined by staff member Carol Shaw and Legatee Peter Heeney. Ron Barassi participated in many events for Legacy over the years, he had been a young Legatee after his father was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27.
