This page is from a Tibetan prayer book. Such books are long, narrow, and printed horizontally. The pages are unbound and stored with wooden covers with silk brocade wrapped around them. The ancient Tibetan art of printing was developed to reproduce Buddhist scriptures and images of the Buddha. Monasteries or wealthy laypersons often commissioned books to gain spiritual merit. Books were printed using woodblock technique, still utilised today, on handmade paper. Scripture books are venerated by both monks and general population. A double-sided sheet of Buddhist scripture written in Tibetan script on hand-made paper. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. John Valantine collected and pasted newspaper cuttings about Mt Dandenong and Kalorama into a scrapbook covering the period from approx 1922 - 1937. Much of the information dealt with the difficulties faced by local fruit growers so John Valantine may also have been a fruit grower. It is also possible that John himself wrote many of the items as from July 15th, 1930, he was appointed a local correspondent for The Age newspaper...John Valantine lived in Farringdon Road, Kalorama. Maitland' was built in 1889 for Thomas Zeplin, who was a Professor of Music. He owned all the land bound by Union Road, Wilson and Montrose Streets and the railway line. 1 Bedford Avenue stayed in family ownership until purchased by Camberwell Council in 1986, initially for a car park. However it was renovated to become part of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. It was opened on 23 November 1990. No 3 Bedford Avenue was built for Thomas Zeplin's daughter and named 'Mervyl' or 'Merryl'. Mrs Brodecky (donor) was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Zeplin. The 2 girls are granddaughters of Thomas Zeplin. Electoral roll information: 1972 & 1977: Albert Vojteck Brodecky, manager, 1 Bedford Avenue. 1977: Ray Nanette Brodecky. There are 2 copies. Thomas had this built for his son and family. The house was occupied by his family, though sometimes rented out. His great-grand-daughter Mrs. A. Brodecky sold to the Camberwell Council in 1986. Originally the Bow Chair started off life with the name of the ‘Smoker’s Bow Chair’ where originally, it wasn’t designed for grandeur like many chairs of the time, but instead was designed for practicality and comfort. The original Smoker’s Bow Chair was a simple chunkier version of the Windsor Chair design which first appeared in the 1820’s. Although it lacked the high back found on any Windsor Chair of the time, it maintained a heavier, sturdier appearance. The main feature was a hoop or bow which was fashioned from steamed wood. This was then curved to make both the back support and arms. The chair also consisted of a wide seat, supported by 4 splayed, spindle legs. In its original form it was found in many country kitchens of the day as well as in many inns and public houses throughout the United Kingdom. Its name of the "Smoker’s Bow Chair" because the sweeping armrests were the perfect height to support a smokers arm when smoking a pipe.A significant piece of furniture from the late 19th century designed for a specific purpose, smoking.
